College football notes ? 10th commit for Utah says decision is firm, hopes to enroll early.

Brighton linebacker Uaea Masina was tempted by the offers from BYU and San Diego State, but in the end it was his love of Utah football that won out as the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Masina committed to the Utes on Sunday.

"I loved the coaches and staff, and it just seems like the right place for me," he said.

Masina said his commitment is firm and he hopes to enroll at Utah early if possible.

Masina has formed a close relationship with Utah defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake, which helped sway his decision in going with the Utes.

"I was just talking to him tonight, and he didn?t even know I?d committed," he said. "He was excited. I?m excited too. It?s a 100 percent commitment."

Masina is the 10th commitment for the Utes for 2013 and the fourth from Utah, joining Cottonwood High tight end Siale Fakailoatonga and offensive lineman Haile Falemaka, and Woods Cross linebacker Filipo Mokofisi.

Arkansas State boots ex-Auburn RB Dyer

Former Auburn running back Michael Dyer has been dismissed from the Arkansas State squad for violating team rules.

Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn announced the decision Saturday, saying: "I am truly disappointed that it didn?t work out here at ASU for Mike. I wish Mike nothing but the best in the future."

The offensive MVP as a freshman in Auburn?s victory over Oregon in the 2011 national championship game wasn?t eligible to play this season for the Red Wolves after the NCAA denied his request to play immediately.

Dyer transferred to Arkansas State in January after he was suspended indefinitely by Auburn coach Gene Chizik for violating unspecified team rules.

Penn State recruiting

Several of the top prospects who have given verbal commitments to Penn State have told the team?s coaches they will stick with the program despite the sanctions handed down by the NCAA last week.

Offensive linemen Brendan Mahon and Andrew Nelson , receiver Will Fuller, defensive end Garrett Sickels , tight end Adam Breneman , and quarterback Christian Hackenberg visited State College on Saturday and met with Penn State coaches.

CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI: Great Certification to start ...

Linux+ is the quickest way to prove your Linux skill to your employer, if you want to be a Linux expert in future.. Previously the certification was was managed completely by Linux Professional Institute (LPI) and now by The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA). Now the certification is known as CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI. This is a high-stakes, vendor-neutral certification that validates the fundamental knowledge and skills required of junior Linux administrators.
Just to share with you, The Computing Technology Industry Association, a non-profit trade association, was created in 1982 as the Association of Better Computer Dealers, Inc. (ABCD) by representatives of five microcomputer dealerships. Over the course of a decade, ABCD laid the groundwork for many of CompTIA?s initiatives and member benefits.

Linux+ was a very demanding exam from CompTIA and was only know as Linux+. From October 31, 2010 it was renamed as ?CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI?.

Who should Attend the Exam

Linux+ is a certification of knowledge of Linux operating systems, from their installation and use to the basics of applicable free software and open source licenses. The Linux+ exam is intended for information technology professionals who have between six to twelve months of practical experience using Linux. Candidate job roles include junior Linux administrator, junior network administrator, systems administrator, Linux database administrator and web administrator.

Who recognizes Linux+

There are many companies who recognize the Linux+ Certification. Generally vendor company deals with Linux demand a Linux+ certification for new recruitment. Companies such as Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo and Xerox recommend or require CompTIA Linux+ which makes it a very prestigious certification for fresh graduates.

What?s new in ?Powerd by LPI?

After they tagged it ?Powered by LPI? CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI candidates, if they want, they may choose, at the time they take the exams, to have their exam record forwarded to the Linux Professional Institute. The process, enables candidates to become certified in LPIC-1 (LPI Certification 1, the junior level certification from LPI) as well, enabling further participation in the LPI program if the candidate chooses. Please note that CompTIA maintains candidate-confidential records for all exam takers, for their own access and use for employment or educational purposes. Any choice to forward an exam record to LPI is made only by the candidate.

What they cover in the Exam

The exam is broken down into several areas of Linux expertise: installation, management, configuration, security, documentation, and hardware. The test is a computer-based multiple-choice exam, with a question followed by four possible answers, at least one (but possibly more) of which must be correct. Common subject matter for exam topics include installation methods, boot loader configuration, managing packages (Debian and RPM management systems are covered), navigating directories via the command line, using the bash shell, security considerations, network administration (including TCP/IP configuration), mounting file systems (such as NFS, SMB or ext3) and managing configuration files for the more common applications that Linux servers are expected to run. Although configuring and running the X Window system is included in the formal exam objectives, there are rarely any questions pertaining to this as the exam focuses on Linux as a server and network operating system rather than for use as a desktop platform.

How they Assess it

Two exams are necessary to be certified: LX0-101 and LX0-102.? LX0-101 covers system architecture; Linux Installation and package management; GNU and Unix commands; devices, Linux filesystems, and filesystem hierarchy standard. LX0-102 covers shells, scripting and data management; user interfaces and desktops; administrative tasks; essential system services; networking fundamentals; security. Below is a summary of the exam and certification process.

Each exam consists of 90 questions. Previously the passing score was 675 out of 900. But, as the table shows, now it scaled and passing score is 500, in a scale of 200-800. 200 means a possible lowest score and 800 is highest.

Where you can take the exam

You can take the exam online without any prerequisite. Please contact with Pearson VUE to schedule your exam. And for course material you can visit CompTIA certification page.

Hope you find this article useful. We wish you to secure the Certification and a have a great start of your career. Thanks.

Google?s Project Glass Will Change The World

Google?s Project Glass Will Change The World

// July 29th, 2012 // Family, technology

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Google was working on a special pair of glasses ? glasses with a built-in camera, display, and interface of some sort ? like a wearable smartphone. Eventually, we learned that this was being called ?Project Glass?, and now we?ve seen dozens upon dozens of people wearing it, as well as content being posted online (mostly photos) taken by Project Glass.

It wasn?t until earlier this month, however, at Google I/O, that we really got an idea of just how epic this product is going to be, and a sneak peak at how much it?s going to change the world. At Google I/O, Google pulled off the most awe-inspiring demo of these glasses. They did a live demo of someone wearing Project Glass while on a Google Hangout (like a video call), skydiving and landing on Moscone Center, where Google I/O was taking place. They showed the livestream onscreen in Moscone, even while the jumpers were in the air. They landed on the roof, rapelled down the side of the building, and then rode BMX bicycles up onto stage ? again, all while livestreaming video so that all the attendees were seeing the demo from the skydivers? POV. A-freakin-mazing. You can watch that demo here.

However, that?s obviously an extreme example. What about something that actually shows Project Glass as part of your real life? Here?s the video demo of that:

This is something I can immediately relate to. It IS nearly impossible to get great photos of your kids, especially as babies. And yes, my daughter also had ?stage fright? when I thrust a camera into her face (even the camera on my phone).

We still have some time before this is here, though. Attendees at Google I/O will be the first to get a pair of Project Glass (or whatever the go-to-market name is), provided they live in the U.S. and had $1,500 to spare last week. Even then, they won?t receive them until next year ? at least 6 months from now, possibly longer.

How much would you be willing to pay for what?s essentially a wearable smartphone?

The Question You Need To Ask Yourself While You're Gaming | The ...

One of the overblown memes of the game community used to be ?was this beta?? ?(it?s since become a parody at places like the Roosh V Forum). Guys got progressively more absurd about micromanaging and nitpicking their game, even in the face of great success, desperate to earn the respect of the community at every step of the seduction ? and in reality, desperate to head off the hollow criticisms of keyboard jockeys who spend more time knocking other guys? successful field reports than they do with women themselves.

I recall a case where a guy was vibing with a woman in a club, and she suddenly blew him off and walked out the door. He followed her out, caught her in the street, continued the seduction and wound up in her bed.?Then he went on the board and asked everyone ?was it beta to follow her out of the club??

Yes? No? It worked, so who cares? In this fashion, men anxious to qualify themselves to other men got into a pernicious habit of substituting the?appellation?of ?alpha? (or ?not beta?) for real results in the field. (Lots of writers are trying to phase out the alpha-beta nomenclature, but I don?t think it will ever die because it?s just such a useful shorthand for sociosexual leaders versus sociosexual followers.)

I got a comment on my recent post about guys who use the ?beta? archetype as a whipping boy, an object of self-congratulatory scorn by those who had passed out of the Matrix:

This is a general theme which pervades the PUA community. It goes further when you see aspiring players actively denigrate the betas that they once were. I?ve heard of players deliberately go and try to pick up a beta?s girlfriend in front of them, ostensibly because the guy ?deserved it? for having bad game.

Its sick to see how far people take that rejection of their past selves, and I?d like to see more sympathy for betas in general? Its a perversion of thought and a violation of abundance mentality.

I agree that there is some of that beta hate undercurrent (that?s why guys are so eager to check ?was that beta??) and I think it?s somewhat misguided. A guy who is on a game blog or forum, discussing his field work, trying to get better, is going in the right direction. His betatude is a problem to be solved, and he understands that or he wouldn?t be where he was to begin with. Let?s fix his problem, he doesn?t deserve personal slams and contemptuous mocking for it.

Anyway, my point is that ?is this beta?? is a dumb question that doesn?t help guys get better in the game.?Danger & Play posted recently on ?the winning question.? The winning question is,??am I being a pussy?? I find that?s an excellent question for getting me started on things, and is applicable to life in general. However, I?ve gotten better results in the game itself with something else.

THE REAL QUESTION YOU NEED TO ASK IN-GAME

When you?re out in the field running your game (when you?ve gotten past the hump of ?am I being a pussy?), it?s easy to get anxious about your moves, wonder if you?re playing it right, if you?re being too forward, if you?re forcing things.

In those situations there?s just one simple question you need to ask yourself and it?s not ?is this beta??

The question is, ?am I chasing??

While there are some things you just plain shouldn?t do (like racing to grab the check on a date, not that you should be going on expensive dates until things are serious anyway), the answer to the question is less about the action itself and more about your mindset and motivations.

Chasing is what you do when you perceive an opportunity to be slipping away from you. It comes from a needy place, a sense that you have to qualify yourself to a girl, to make a case that you?re the guy she should be with ? a sense that you have to engage her on her terms, not yours.

Chasing is what you do when you agree with a woman?s opinion because you?re afraid your true opinion would offend her.

Chasing is what you do when you keep calling/texting and asking out a woman who is flaky in responding or keeps finding things more important on her schedule than you.?You?re either chasing a woman who?s really not interested (and so you?re coming across as annoying and clueless), or you?re playing into her script that she can treat you poorly and take advantage of your time, attention and money. Either way, it?s not a position you want to be in.

Chasing is really born out of a mindset that you aren?t as good as any of the women you would consider dating, and thus your default position is to assume a supplicating pose, to make a case to her that she should consider you if she?s feeling charitable.

Because chasing is about relative power, to answer the question you need to develop a good sensor for the flow and frame of an interaction, an intuition for the balance of power in the exchange. That should come along with the rest of your passive game, the tools you use to tell if a woman is interested in you, to calibrate your game to her personality?and to gauge the buying temperature.

It?s important to understand that initiating is not chasing. Aloof game is not just sitting around inertly waiting for women to make the moves. Most women are not going to initiate with you. If you?re very high-value or physically attractive, women may hit on you openly, but a generation of effort to get women to act like men has not succeeded in getting women to pursue like men. The best you can hope, as a strategy, for is that women will make themselves approachable and you?ll be able to make low-risk approaches.?Even that is not an entirely sound strategy. You are going to have to go talk to (open) the women you find attractive with no real guarantee you?ll get anything out of the interaction. You aren?t chasing; you are setting up a frame that gives her the opportunity to respond to you.

Escalating is also not chasing. Just as above, you cannot expect women will do the escalation, as a general rule. All that Gen Y feminist stuff about ?enthusiastic consent? is a bunch of hooey ? even women who positively want sex with you are often not going to take on the burden of pushing it forward, but will respond to your sexual leadership.?An over-eagerness when escalating IS chasing, and a major cause of blown seductions (one of my go-to escalation moves is to spontaneously back off on the sexual energy and see if she responds by bringing it back up).

Investing modestly in a woman is not chasing, not necessarily at least. When you buy a woman a drink on a date, are you doing it because you?re a high-value guy inviting her to be a guest in your space for the next hour, or because you?re afraid if you don?t do what she expects she?ll reject you? One is chasing, the other is not.

Chasing, again, is action taken against what you perceive to be a widening gap of interest.

If you?re chasing, check yourself. Take a deep breath. Back off a bit. See if she fills the gap.

Approach, initiate, escalate, invest. Just don?t chase.

Hundreds in Phoenix march against Arizona immigration law

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A few hundred protesters, some toting placards reading "Migration is a Human Right," marched in Phoenix on Saturday to protest Arizona's two-year-old crackdown on illegal immigration.

State law SB-1070, signed by Republican Governor Jan Brewer in April 2010, seeks to drive illegal immigrants out of Arizona.

A federal judge blocked parts of the law before it took effect, but the U.S. Supreme Court late last month upheld its most controversial provision requiring police to check the immigration status of people they stop if they suspect they are in the country illegally.

"I feel like we're singled out," said Angel Diaz, 33, an artist among 200 to 300 mostly Hispanic protesters rallying in a park ahead of the protest march.

"We're being racially profiled. Pretty much I feel that our rights are being taken from us," he added. He was wearing a Mexican wrestler's mask and a broad brimmed sombrero.

Diaz, a Hispanic who said he is a U.S. citizen, said he was followed and pulled over by police in the Phoenix valley a week ago in a traffic stop that did not result in charges.

Protesters, some chanting "this is what democracy looks like" and wearing T-shirts reading "We will not comply - Down with SB 1070," set off on the one-mile (1.6 kilometer) walk to the headquarters of federal immigration police in the city.

In a mixed ruling late last month, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the state law's most controversial measure - requiring police to check the immigration status of anyone detained and suspected of being in the country illegally - but struck down three other parts.

Supporters of the crackdown argue it is needed as the federal government has failed to secure the state's porous border with Mexico.

The administration of President Barack Obama opposed the law on the grounds it pre-empted federal powers on immigration, and opponents say it is a mandate for racially profiling Hispanics, who make up almost a third of the state's population.

March organizer Carlos Garcia said demonstrators seek to pressure the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, not to partner with local police forces that implement immigration laws.

"When a police officer can ask to determine if someone has documents or not, that's when racially profiling, racism (arises)" he said. "That's what we're opposed to."

The rally and march come as a hardline Arizona sheriff and his office are on trial in federal court in Phoenix in a civil lawsuit that accuses them of racial profiling.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who styles himself as "America's toughest sheriff," is accused of singling out Hispanic citizens and immigrants in traffic stops in the Phoenix valley, a charge he denies.

Natally Cruz, 24, a Mexican undocumented immigrant, was among four people arrested by police for blocking a road outside the U.S. District Court in Phoenix last Tuesday when Arpaio testified in court.

"We want to show Arpaio that we are not afraid of him," Cruz, who was quizzed by ICE agents about her immigration status but was released, told the protest crowd.

"Many of us have been living in fear for years ... Enough is enough," she said.

Abigail's Alcove: The Need for Recreation

Here is what I'm doing tonight for the first time since 1996, taking a fencing lesson! My husband is actually coming home from work early so that can drive to another town to start fencing. I can't think of a more romantic gesture for a Mom in the middle of a colic battle with our youngest child. He is amazing!

The budget is tight in the Benjamin household and I am an extreme couch potato. Sports has never really been my "thing." However, fencing is not a post-baby gym workout for me. Fencing is one of the coolest activities ever invented.

Here's what I learning this month--Recreation is vital to a spiritual warrior. My bff St. Teresa of Avila made it mandatory for her Carmelite convents--and remember these are the girls who wore horse blankets for habits! Fluff wasn't exactly on their daily schedule.

Here's what I've finally started to discover in my fifth year of nursing colicky babies. Recreation is not "blowing off steam" after a hard day of mothering. Recreation isn't date night. Recreation isn't "Me Time". Recreation isn't selfish.

Not really sure what a holy "recreation time" looks like, other than a small but important part of my week where I get to shrug off the demands of my vocation and do something that I enjoyed purely for fun as a young girl. My husband has found fishing recently. ?He comes back from his fishing trips with an extra sparkle in his eye. I hope I get the same lift from my Fencing Class tonight! But I know if it isn't Fencing, my recreation time will be something else.

God doesn't want me to have fun in every moment (gotta to get those spiritual muscles in shape somehow) but He does want me to have a reliable bit of spiritually healthy fun in some moments.

Debt Consolidation ? Liberation Or Trap? | YodZiaN.CoM - Finance ...

Debt consolidation is supposed to help you get free of debt. By combining a lot of smaller debts into one big loan you can pay the debt off with lower repayments. So how come a lot of people have the same debt load two years later?

Answer is, they treated the symptom, not the cause. Debt consolidation only works if you address the underlying problem, which is that you spend more than you earn. Once you?ve consolidated debt, it can be very difficult to do it again.

The way it?s supposed to work is that a loan pays off your debts, you sweep away all your past mistakes and extravagances, get a grip on your finances and vow to live within your means. This way you never again have to face the consequences of any more mistakes and extravagances.

But maybe you had just cause for spending too much. Medical bills are the largest cause of bankruptcy in America. If you got sick or had a major accident you?ve got big bills to pay and this can devastate your finances. If this is you, face up to your debt situation before it gets out of control. Your hospital probably has someone on staff to help people in your situation. Find the person with a sympathetic ear and use them. It?s better to ask for help than to prevaricate and suffer alone.

Your aim should be to keep current with all your non-medical bills, but to work out a way of paying your doctor over a longer period of time. If your medical care providers know that they?ll get their money in the end, there is usually a payment plan that you can use. Remember to keep up to date with your household bills: you?ve got to pay your energy bills but the doctors can wait. They can afford it.

Or maybe the reason you?re still in debt is that you still have to pay your student loans but you?re not yet earning enough to live. If you?re young enough to be in this situation but old enough to have graduated, then the answer?s simple. Get a better job, or get a second job, or both. This sounds tough and it is, but life is tough. If you?ll learn how to be in control of your money at an early age, you?ll be learning how to be one of life?s winners.

For those who are in debt but not sick or young, the simple truth still remains. You?re spending more than you earn.

Here?s a way you can help yourself. Get out your wallet, take out the dollar bills and the credit cards and spread them out on the table. See those credit cards? You probably think of them as infinite plastic. You use them over and over to buy what you want. Until they actually are maxed out, they seem infinite. They will always gratify your spending impulses. That is, if you will let them.

See those dollar bills? They can buy the exact same things as the plastic, but when you?ve handed them over, they?ve gone. If you want more of those bills, you?ve got to earn them. Now get the truth into your head that you can only spend up to the value of those dollar bills. Not one cent more. If you can discipline yourself into this frame of mind, you?ll begin to see that you can repay your debt.

And here?s another thing. You can cut up your plastic even while there?s still money to pay on them. Think about it: destroy the cards but keep up your repayments and one by one those debts will disappear.

If you can think of debt consolidation as a last resort, if you can tackle the causes of your debt (not the symptoms) and if you can promise yourself to start afresh, you can be debt-free.

Half of Americans Do Not Know the President's Religion

Three and a half years into President Obama's first term as president, half of Americans cannot accurately say what religion he is, according to a poll released this week.

Only 49 percent of respondents said that Obama was Christian while 17 percent inaccurately said he was Muslim. Nearly one-third of respondents said they did not know the president's religion, according to the poll released Thursday by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life.

More people - 60 percent - knew that Romney, who has not held elected office in a decade, was Mormon than knew which religion the sitting president subscribes to.

And while only 9 percent of respondents said Romney was a religion that he is not, more than twice that amount said Obama adheres to a religion other than Christianity. The vast majority of those claiming Obama is not a Christian said he was a Muslim.

Nearly one in three Republicans said Obama was Muslim, twice as many as in 2008, the Pew study shows.

"Unfortunately there has been a development of a bizarre echo chamber within right wing of the political spectrum that truth and reality have failed to penetrate," said Ibrahim Hooper, communications director at Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Washington-based Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. "It's a self-perpetuating, self-reinforcing delusion."

But this seemingly large lack of basic knowledge about the president may have more to do with people's opinion of Obama than how much they know about religious beliefs, said Alan Cooperman, associate director for research at the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

"It's entirely possible that what people are telling us isn't exactly what they know but they are expressing an opinion," Cooperman said. "We suspect - it's hard to prove it- that some of the people who tell us that the president is a Muslim are using the question as a way to express their distrust or dislike for the president."

Only 8 percent of Democrats said Obama was Muslim. Because there is such a wide divide between the parties' responses, Cooperman said the results do not "just show whether people are ignorant on the president's religion but more that they have an opinion on his religion."

The percentage of people who said Obama was Muslim has stayed fairly steady since August 2010, when firestorm erupted over plans to build an Islamic community center two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City.

Hooper said that while the tension between Muslims and Christians has not been as public since the " Ground Zero Mosque " controversy, he has seen "a steady erosion of tolerance and mutual understanding based on this relentless campaign of Islamophobia" since Obama was elected.

"It is visceral hatred for President Obama and to justify it they have to come up with these reasons: he is the other, he's Muslim, he's foreign born."

But as of now, a candidate's religion will not likely be the driving factor for whether people pick Obama or Romney in November.

Even though 65 percent of those who think Obama is Muslim said they were uncomfortable with his religion, most of them also said they already planned to vote for Romney. And among voters who knew Romney was Mormon, 80 percent either said his faith did not make them uncomfortable or that it did not matter.

"I'm not going to say it doesn't matter at all," Cooperman said, but it "doesn't seem to have a lot of impact on their voting preference."

Workplace Fire Safety - Health And Safety In The Workplace

Workplace Fire Safety

Workplace Fire Safety measures must be a consideration for any company whether there is an obvious source of flame or not as a situation can quickly arise where circumstances come together to cause a fire risk condition.

A workplace fire is potentially the worst disaster the can happen to a business. As well as the terrible consequences of people being killed or seriously injured in a blaze, workplace fires often wreak damage so severe and costly to repair that many of the companies where they occur go permanently out of business.

In fact, it is estimated that up to 80% of businesses never fully recover from a serious fire, and even a small fire can still result in financial losses, disruption, loss of customers and damage to its reputation.

Government statistics show that those in charge of business premises ? whether they be in offices, factories, hospitals or schools ? have a long way to go in managing the risks from fire. In 2011 there were 27,500 recorded fires in workplaces which resulted in 12 deaths and 1,200 people injured.

Therefore, it is essential that employers take steps to adequately control all fire risks at their premises. Without proper fire safety measures in place, everyone at work and others who may be in the location, are at risk of being injured or killed as a result of a fire.

There are a wide range of work activities and materials that have the potential to cause a workplace fire. For example, discarded smokers? materials and sparks from welding or machinery can cause materials such as waste paper or solvents to ignite while faulty electrical equipment, damaged cables or overloaded electrical sockets can also be a source of ignition.

However, both the risk of fire occurring and the human and financial cost can be significantly reduced, or even eliminated, providing business owners take adequate precautions. This means identifying, assessing and reducing workplace fire risks, providing adequate fire safety measures and equipment and having a plan in place to deal with any emergencies.

Breaches of Fire Safety Law are now increasing as Fire Services routinely inspect premises after a fire, whether a small or large fire, and a business could be fined for not producing a risk assessment, blocked or non-operational fire exits and excessive storage of combustible items. So the need to ensure that workplace fire safety measures have been taken is a paramount need of any business owner of they want to avoid not only fines and a possible prison sentence, but also the loss of their whole business and possibly their whole livelihood.

Impact of a Business's 'Socially Responsible' Practices on Employee ...

Michael Vlassopoulos and Mirco Tonin, lecturers in economics at the University of Southampton, have been conducting research into the impact that Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives have on workers at the companies that take ton those initiatives. ?At VoxEU, they provide a summary of their initial findings. ?The takeaway here seems to be that there are real benefits to CSR strategies when it come to worker productivity.?

Specifically, they are associated with a 20% rise in productivity and this effect is present whether the donation to the charity is lump sum or related to subject?s performance. This suggests that what motivates workers is the presence of social incentives rather than their specific form. Consistent with this, in the real world firms introduce CSR policies in a variety of ways. For example, in the US, large retailers and grocery chains, such as Target Corporation and Whole Foods Market donate 5% of their pre-tax profits to charitable groups, while in the UK there exists the so-called Percent Club for companies that pledge to donate at least 1% of their pre-tax profits to charitable causes, with members like GlaxoSmithKline, Deloitte, and the John Lewis Partnership. On the other hand, other firms opt not to explicitly link their CSR budget to profits.

When we compare the effectiveness of private and social incentives in boosting productivity, we find that social incentives are at least half as effective in motivating subjects as compared to private incentives. What this means is that an employer that spends $1 on a charitable cause will generate at least the same increase in productivity as $0.50 spent on paying workers directly.

If we consider the additional gains arising from tax benefits, and additional advantages coming from the appeal of CSR to customers, regulators, or investors, we may well conclude that social incentives are cost-effective. Also, one could expect social incentives to become increasingly more effective in motivating employees relative to private incentives as earnings increase and the marginal utility of money decreases. This may be one of the factors behind the increasing importance of CSR policies. For instance, in a survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (2007), 34% of corporate executives indicated that CSR was a high or very high priority for their firms three years earlier, compared to 55% saying so with regard to the present and almost 70% expressing their expectations on how high a priority it will be three years hence.

Ecstasy may cause memory problems

Club drug's effects documented in new users

Web edition : 6:16 pm

Light use of the club drug Ecstasy may cause subtle memory deficits. People who popped just three Ecstasy tablets a month over the course of a year saw their memory slip on a laboratory test, scientists report online July 25 in Addiction.

The new results offer some of the best evidence yet that the drug can change the brain, says psychiatric neuroscientist Ronald Cowan of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. ?It?s been very, very difficult to convince people that there?s a causative effect of the drug,? he says. ?This adds strong evidence to that.?

Scientists debate whether Ecstasy, a drug that brings euphoria, boundless energy and heightened sensory experiences, can actually harm the brain in part by screwing with cells that produce the chemical messenger serotonin. Past studies have been notoriously hard to interpret because brain differences seen between Ecstasy users and nonusers could have existed long before the drug use began. And people who use Ecstasy frequently tend to use other drugs too, making it hard to tease out Ecstasy?s effect.

For the study, Daniel Wagner of the University of Cologne in Germany and his colleagues wanted to catch people as they started using Ecstasy. The team recruited 149 people who had used Ecstasy five or fewer times and ran the subjects through a battery of brain tests looking for signs of mental deficits. One year later, the team retested 43 people who had not used Ecstasy since being recruited, and 23 who had used 10 or more Ecstasy pills in that time. These people reported using an average of 33.6 tablets.

On most laboratory tests, the two groups performed similarly. But on one memory test, participants who had used Ecstasy scored worse. Ecstasy users had trouble remembering which distinctive border had framed a particular picture, both immediately after they saw a set of images and one hour later. The results show that a moderate amount of Ecstasy use over just a year can cause memory problems, says Wagner. ?We were really surprised by that.?

It?s not clear whether this deficit picked up in the laboratory would be noticeable in everyday life, says neuroscientist Jerrold Meyer of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Perhaps some populations, such as students, would suffer more consequences from this particular memory problem, he says.

?I?m reasonably convinced by their data, but obviously as with any study, there are always unanswered questions,? Meyer says.? Scientists don?t know if memory skills would bounce back when Ecstasy use stopped, for instance, or whether the severity of the memory problem scales with the amount of Ecstasy used.

Larger studies that examine loads of different aspects of mental function may help address these uncertainties. ?To have a comprehensive answer, you need to study a drug from many different domains,? Wagner says. For now, ?it?s hard to say that it?s a harmful drug.?

Investing In The UK - Dana Point Real Estate

Investing in UK property has long been the choice of foreign investors. UK real estate has done well for individuals who have invested from outside the country. This is especially true of London, where real estate values have skyrocketed in recent years. People wishing to set up home in the UK are aware of the high standard of living this country has to offer. However, with this standard also comes a high cost of living and substantial amounts of tax to be paid. In fact, taxes are probably the biggest obstacle to purchasing property in the United Kingdom. There are five taxes that should be taken into consideration before you make a decision to buy property in the UK.

The UK, unlike many countries, does not have restrictions when it comes to property ownership for foreign investors. This makes it easy for Americans to buy property in the UK. Real estate prices are high in most parts of the country and have risen substantially in the last few years. This is great news for people who already own homes but not such good news for new buyers who are now forced to pay premium prices for even modest homes. This should not dampen the enthusiasm of anyone wishing to relocate to the United Kingdom, but it is something that should be kept in mind. Fuel prices are a lot higher in the UK than they are in America and this can have an impact on your travel routes. If you are planning on working in the UK it may be a good idea to purchase a home that is an easy commute to work.

There are two taxes that are indirect taxes. Stamp duty is the tax that is put on property based on the purchase price. The percentages can vary between 1-4% and are dependent on the cost of the property. Home purchases that cost over half a million pounds are charged the 4% tax. Another indirect tax is known as a council tax. This is a tax that comes from local authorities. This rate also varies and depends on where in the country the property is bought. The purchase price and value of the property is also taken into consideration when levying this tax. These indirect taxes can be costly and definitely have to be thought about before making a purchase.

There are three direct taxes that homebuyers should be aware of. Income tax is charged to people who own homes in the UK as an investment vehicle. If the property gains enough value that you earn money on it, you are charged income tax accordingly. This tax only applies to investors and if you live in the home you bought, you need not be concerned about it. Another tax is the capital gains tax. This tax is applied if you make money by selling your UK property and are living in the UK. Non-residents who sell their property are exempt from this tax if the property is owned as an investment only.

The inheritance tax may apply to you if you have assets in the UK and are an investor. If you live outside the UK you may be able to get out of paying this tax. Consulting a lawyer or real estate advisor may prove beneficial. As a rule, most people living outside the UK need not consider this an issue. Living in the United Kingdom can be a rewarding experience and affords many benefits to residents. To find out more about obtaining financing for your UK purchase you may wish to visit Simply Finance.

To understand childhood obesity, researchers look to inactive, fat rats

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Childhood obesity has nearly tripled in the past three decades, and by 2009, 17 percent of those 2-19 years of age were classified as obese. If actions against childhood obesity do not take place it is likely that today's children could be the first generation in over a century to experience a decline in life expectancy due to the epidemic of childhood obesity which leads to complications in later life. While little is known about how inactivity and obesity lead to undesirable side effects such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers, scientists at the University of Missouri in Columbia have reviewed dozens of studies that look at childhood obesity using new animal models. The scientists suggest that the models could be key to better understanding the condition and its complex relationship to certain diseases.

The article appears in the online edition of the American Journal of Physiology -- Regulatory, Integrative, and Comparative Physiology, published by the American Physiological Society.

Using Inactive, Fat Rats to Study Juvenile Obesity

Lead author Dr. Michael Roberts and his colleagues have written a review article outlining previous research, including some of their own studies, on various animal models that simulate childhood obesity through inactivity. The researchers concentrate specifically on a particular example, called the rodent wheel lock model, to study how different organ systems of young rats respond to a cessation of daily physical activity. This model houses rats in cages with running wheels starting at 28 days of age, which the animals voluntarily use for the next three to six weeks. After that period, the wheels are locked, preventing their primary source of physical activity.

Results

The researchers assert that findings from a variety of studies of juvenile obesity in humans show that children who are inactive in childhood are significantly more likely than those who engaged in exercise when young to continue this habit into adulthood. Additionally, they say, this inactivity in childhood initiates the mechanisms that lead to the consequences of obesity seen in adults. Using the wheel lock model and other animal models for studying childhood obesity is giving scientists more insight on exactly what happens when activity is restricted during youth, leading to obesity.

For example, studies have shown that young, inactive rats have reduced insulin sensitivity (a precursor to type-2 diabetes), eat more and burn off fewer calories, and develop larger fat pads than animals who continue to exercise. Other studies show that fat cells multiply to a significantly greater extent in rats who aren't allowed to run on their wheels, while others show that such voluntary exercise in parents can stem positive transgenerational effects in offspring that are bred to be genetically predisposed to obesity (for instance, reduced body fat). Additionally, the wheel lock and other animal model suggest that exercise during youth may help preserve muscle mass over the course of aging and lower the activity of genes associated with cardiovascular disease.

Importance of the Findings

The authors suggest that the wheel lock model and other models that allow exercise, then block it later, are akin to modern-day living conditions in which children who are active during the summer become increasingly sedentary when the school year starts. For these children, voluntary exercise abruptly ends when they must ride in motorized vehicles to school, sit in classrooms, and have insufficient recess or physical education classes. By studying these conditions in rats and other animals, Roberts and his colleagues say, researchers can avoid the ethical conundrum involved in forcing active children to refrain from exercise, imposing biopsies and other tissue sampling techniques, or other parts of research that are possible in animals but not in humans. However, the authors note that animal research still has a long way to go.

They suggest that future studies incorporating animal models of childhood obesity take place over longer periods to determine how inactivity during youth contributes to adult consequences of obesity and whether interventions, such as reintroducing exercise, can affect this trajectory. They also note that future studies should examine whether restricting exercise during childhood could affect future motivation to exercise in adulthood, something preliminary work in their lab and others' has suggested.

"Continuing to examine the effects of inactivity on physiological homeostasis during youth is crucial given that 58 percent of children between the ages of 6-11 fail to obtain the recommended 60 minutes per day of physical activity and 92 percent of adolescents fail to achieve this goal," the authors say. "Importantly we contend that using juvenile rodent inactivity models will continue to provide a powerful clinical translational tool that can be used for primordial prevention of human childhood obesity."

Study Team and Funding

In addition to Dr. Roberts, the article was written by Joseph M. Company, Jacob D. Brown, Ryan G. Toedebusch, Dr. Jaume Padilla, Dr. Nathan T. Jenkins, Dr. Harold Laughlin, and Dr. Frank Booth, all of the University of Missouri in Columbia. The work was supported in part by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.

America's most charming inns

Jumping Rocks Photography

The Swag Country Inn in North Carolina offers panoramas of four mountain ranges: the Great Smokies, the Plott Balsams, the Richland Balsams and the Black Mountains.

By Marnie Hanel, Departures.com

When travelers recount experiences at their favorite inns, their memories usually come down to one detail: a fresh-from-the-oven blueberry muffin, a hot water bottle tucked between the sheets on a cold night, a well-timed umbrella before the rain. For Will Carlson, executive director of Select Registry Distinguished Inns of North America, it was a recent midnight snack.

?I was running really late at a conference, and by the time I got to the inn, the kitchen had been closed for two hours,? he says. ?The innkeeper realized that I hadn?t had anything to eat. He opened up the kitchen and put together an outstanding Caesar salad. I didn?t even ask. They just brought it to my room.?

It's that level of attention that separates small-scale, owner-operated properties from the rest.??Every innkeeper you talk to is someone who, by nature, wants to provide a pleasing experience that is, in and of itself, special,? he explains. ?People really care.?

The 10 boutique properties on this list deliver top-notch service, delicious food (marquee chefs, on-site cooking schools and organic gardens are commonplace) and doses of Americana.?Take the Hob Nob Inn, a quintessential Martha?s Vineyard inn whose family history and ultra-welcoming style has permeated the surrounding area. Or Big Sur, California?s Post Ranch Inn, which is perched on a cliff top high above crashing waves and offers some of the most gorgeous sunsets around. For a remote wilderness destination, head to Tutka Bay Lodge in Homer, Alaska, and its 10 acres that provide numerous opportunities for outdoor adventure.?

Suu Kyi addresses Myanmar parliament, illustrating year of change

YANGON (Reuters) - Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi addressed Myanmar's parliament for the first time on Wednesday to support calls by a ruling party lawmaker for new laws to protect the country's many ethnic minority groups.

While her address might be routine for many parliaments around the world, it symbolized the huge changes that have unfolded in Myanmar since the military ceded power to a quasi-civilian government in March last year.

After two decades of animosity between the junta and Suu Kyi, who spent much of it under house arrest, her once-outlawed National League for Democracy (NLD) won 43 of 44 seats in April by-elections, giving greater legitimacy to a political system that was widely dismissed at the outset as a charade.

Speaking from the floor of the lower house in the remote capital, Naypyitaw, Suu Kyi said Myanmar's ethnic minorities had suffered decades of civil war and underdevelopment and that laws should be made to ensure their rights were guaranteed.

Suu Kyi, who was sworn in at the end of the last session on May 1, said such legislation should be "based on equality, mutual respect and confidence for the emergence of a genuine democratic union".

Also significant was her backing for a motion tabled by a lawmaker from the NLD's biggest rival, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), a party dominated by retired military people and created by the former regime.

Citing a report by the Asian Development Bank, Suu Kyi said Myanmar's ethnic minority areas, which are mostly along the borders with China and Thailand, were the worst affected in terms of poverty.

"Civil war still has not ended. Therefore, it can be seen that protecting the rights of the ethnic minorities is more broad-based than preserving languages and cultures," she added.

President Thein Sein issued a call for dialogue last August with more than a dozen ethnic rebel groups to end decades of fighting with the military on multiple fronts and now refers to the militias as "brothers".

Truces have been agreed with all but one group, the Kachin Independence Army, and several have entered into discussions with the government on terms for political agreements.

Board: BP missed the big hazard issues in spill

(AP) ? BP focused too much on the little details of personal worker safety instead of the big systemic hazards that led to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill and wasn't as strict on overall safety when drilling rigs involved other companies that they hired, a government safety panel concludes.

Eleven workers were killed in the April 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig and about 200 million gallons of oil flowed into the Gulf from the blown-out Macondo well. The company formerly known as British Petroleum had the lease on the well, but the drilling rig was owned and operated by another company and BP has faulted drilling contractor Transocean.

That contractor-owner split made a difference in major accident prevention with the oil disaster, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board concluded in a presentation to be made in a hearing in Houston Tuesday.

"BP applied lesser process safety standards" to rigs contracted out than it does to its own facilities, safety board managing director Daniel Horowitz told The Associated Press in an interview. "In reality, both Transocean and BP dropped the ball on major accident hazards in this case."

The oil company "did not conduct an effective comprehensive hazard evaluation of the major accident risks for the activities of the Deepwater Horizon rig or for the Macondo well" because BP's large risk evaluation program "looked only at BP assets, NOT drilling rigs that it contracted" to other firms for operation, investigators said in the 50-page Power Point presentation.

A BP spokesman in a statement emailed to AP said the company "stepped up" and developed more rigorous safety indicators following the accident.

The safety board said when BP looked at offshore endeavors it "focused on financial risks, not process safety risks." And after the Deepwater Horizon explosion, the company's own accident investigation report "recommended requiring hazard reviews of BP-owned and contracted rigs," the safety board's presentation says.

"That's very disturbing because the Gulf of Mexico belongs to the American people," said former Sen. Bob Graham, who co-chaired a different government oil spill investigation, one appointed by President Barack Obama. The Chemical Safety Board's findings, which mostly mirror the report from Graham's panel and another, pointed at a second standard for what BP owned and operated and what it didn't. Graham said he didn't know that.

"If that's true, it's reprehensible," Graham told The Associated Press Monday night.

Congressional Democrats requested the safety board investigation. The panel usually investigates deadly industrial accidents and makes recommendations but has no power to regulate, much like the National Transportation Safety Board.

The panel has been criticized for its role in investigating the disaster. Transocean resisted complying with a subpoena arguing that the spill fell outside the board's jurisdiction that involves industrial accidents onshore. An offshore rig is an ocean-going vessel that is motionless when drilling. The board also had to push to gain access to the examination of the blowout preventer, and at one point demanded that the analysis stop, saying representatives of the companies that made and maintained the 300-ton device have been getting preferential and sometimes hands-on access to it.

The board's presentation said there is a difference between worker safety and making sure the entire rig and well are safe, and that's where owner BP and rig operator Transocean were "inadequate." And that same lack of focus on the bigger picture of safety bore an "eerie resemblance" to what the safety board found in its investigation of a 2005 Texas City refinery explosion that killed 15 people, safety board investigator Cheryl MacKenzie said in a news release.

That federal oil spill commission report, co-chaired by Graham and former EPA chief William Reilly, and a National Academy of Engineering found similar problems.

Reducing lost time for workers and making sure they wear the right kind of boot is important, "but that really doesn't have much to do with system safety," said former Navy Secretary and now engineering professor Donald Winter, who chaired the National Academy of Engineering investigation. "It is fundamentally different."

GOP activist Repya: 'Where's the audit?'

Veteran GOP activist Joe Repya offers his thoughts on what to do with his party in Minnesota. In a Strib commentary, he says: ?The Republican Party of Minnesota must prove to the state's voters that it is not engaged in a cover-up. Remember, it's not the act of wrongdoing but the cover-up that always brings you down. The party's executive board has instead taken the "don't ask, don't tell" position, insisting the party is broke and can't afford a forensic audit. The Campaign Finance Board ruling raises troubling questions: Why is the party really refusing to conduct an audit? Will an audit uncover more alleged civil or criminal wrongdoing? Will it implicate more GOP leaders, including officeholders past and present? Would it expose additional Federal Election Commission violations? Will it expose graft, political payoffs or outright corruption? Will more GOP lobbyists or major donors be implicated??

Briana Bierschbach at Politics in Minnesota (along with Paul Demko) offers a deeper view of the GOP?s miseries: ?RNC Committeewoman Pat Anderson, who was one of the leaders in pushing for an internal financial probe of the party?s books, says new leadership atop the party has cleaned up its mismanaged financial process so these things never happen again, but there?s still a long way to go in retiring all the debts. ?It?s going to take years to get out of debt,? she said. ?I think the party is defunct for several election cycles.? ? Anderson is among a circle of Republicans who want to see Sutton criminally prosecuted. ?Our hope is that the county attorney does something,? she said. ?I think that Tony surrounded himself with people that were incompetent.? ? That sounds generous.

As familiar as she is with ?it,? Our Favorite Congresswoman has really stepped in ?it? this time. Reaction, outside the Beck/FoxNews echo chamber, has been universally negative. At The Huffington Post, James Zogby writes: ?Even with Huma Abedin's sterling character, and [Michele] Bachmann's reckless and irritating penchant for show-boating, it took the challenge from Congressman Keith Ellison, the first Muslim to serve in Congress, to force the issue into the open. After all, the letters from Bachmann and company had been released a month ago and had been endorsed by the chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence. It was not until Ellison wrote his piece and several writers echoed his concern, prompting television shows to ask questions, that attention was paid to Bachmann's charges. This moved Senator McCain to act to defend Huma Abedin and to denounce Bachmann. And once McCain spoke, other GOP leaders and editorials in major daily newspapers quickly followed suit. In the end, the loony Members of Congress who co-signed the Bachmann letters were left stripped of supporters?? save for crackpot fringe groups and real haters of Arabs and Muslims.?

The Washington Post seized on criticism of Bachmannn by Sen. John McCain and House Speaker John Boehner to immunize itself from making a partisan attack on Bachmann. The paper wrote: ?It would be simple to ignore the baseless and paranoid assertions of Ms. Bachmann were she not a member of Congress and an also-ran in the recent race for the Republican presidential nomination. Her status doesn't confer respectability on her views?? Americans are inured to all manner of nonsense from Congress ? but it does call for a response, if only to restore a dose of rationality to the public discourse. ? Among the co-signers of Ms. Bachmann's letter are Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona, notorious for describing abortion as having done more harm to blacks than slavery; Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia, who described then-presidential candidate Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, as ?uppity?; and Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, known for evidence-free rants about plots involving U.S. passport-bearing ?terror babies,? born here and trained overseas to carry out attacks on America.?

The St. Cloud Times editorializes on the matter, saying, ?Bachmann faces a simple fact: Immediately either substantiate her accusations or retract them and apologize. To choose any other route, especially silence, is to lose even more of her credibility. ? It?s a given Bachmann will ignore her detractors? requests. However, her elected peers and own adviser are calling her out. Silence won?t do.? She is rarely silent for long.

Did I say ?universally negative?? At FrontPageMag.com, Robert Spencer writes: ?The only problem with Ellison?s wounded-martyr stance toward Bachmann?s accusations is that what she said is true: Ellison really does have a ?long record of being associated? with Hamas-linked CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood. As long ago as 2006, Ellison?s closeness to Nihad Awad, co-founder of Hamas-linked CAIR, was a matter of public record. Awad, who notoriously said in 1994 that he was ?in support of the Hamas movement,? spoke at fundraisers for Ellison, raising considerable sums for his first Congressional race. According to investigative journalist Patrick Poole, Ellison has appeared frequently at CAIR events since then, despite the fact that CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas terror funding case ? so named by the Justice Department.? The source material on everything Spencer mentions is nearly as deep as he is.

At Power Line, Paul Mirengoff writes: ?Andy McCarthy, an expert on the Muslim Brotherhood and a friend of Power Line, has defended Bachmann?s line of inquiry. He argues that there are two legitimate questions to ask about Abedin. First, in light of her family history, is she someone who ought to have a security clearance, particularly one that would give her access to top-secret information about the Brotherhood. Second, is she someone who may be sympathetic to aspects of the Brotherhood?s agenda, such that Americans ought to be concerned that she is helping shape American foreign policy? ? I?m glad that Bachmann and her colleagues, Reps. Gohmert, Westmoreland, Franks, and Rooney, are concerned about the tilt in State Department policy in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood.? ?

Over 30 years, there have been almost 10,000 HIV-AIDS cases in Minnesota. Some stats, via the Strib: ?As of December 2011, 7,136 Minnesotans were living with HIV ? about half with the virus and half with full-blown AIDS.
? 77 percent are male.
? 81 percent are 35 or older.
? 86 percent of new infections occurred in the metro area, but AIDS has been diagnosed in 90 percent of Minnesota counties.
? 72 percent of new cases among males were reported by men who had sex with men.
? 90-plus percent of new cases among women were attributed to heterosexual contact.
? Minnesota has the nation's 14th-lowest AIDS rate.?

The Strib?s Thomas Lee has a story about a new mini-Target concept down in Chicago: ?Inside 1 State Street, the scene was much more serene. Small groups of Target employees scattered throughout the building, putting the final touches on one of the Minneapolis-based retailer's boldest ventures in recent years: a smaller store that caters specifically to the urban shopper. Come next Sunday, CityTarget will debut in Chicago, where the chaos of everyday city life will spill into the two-level structure. The store will feature more checkout lanes, two-shelf shopping carts and smaller sizes of goods like toilet paper so that consumers can more easily carry as they walk home, grab a cab, or hop on the ?L? train.?
