The PocketGamer.biz week that was: 3DS nears 1 million in UK, Nokia going nowhere, and the battle for China heats up

The past 7 days in bite-sized portions

At the start of this week, Microsoft's COO for China, Michel van der Bel, told the world that Windows Phone had edged ahead of Apple in the Chinese smartphone market - despite having only entered the region two months ago.

"We've only just begun," van der Bel said.

Two days later, figures from Woori Investment and Securities Co. torpedoed his boast, suggesting that Apple's share of the market was almost three times the size of Windows Phone's.

Market share is difficult to determine, particularly in China, and research firms and ad networks throw up contrasting assessments every week.?But while individually such assessments can be misleading, taken together they can provide insight into overall industry trends, or of a gathering consensus.

To the end, we present you with our condensed overview of the industry happenings of the last seven days.

Fry's stocks unlocked Nokia N9, is slightly misinformed about its specs

Image

Sure, Nokia's Lumia 900 and 808 PureView may have garnered much of the spotlight lately, but lest we forgot about its flagship MeeGo handset. If you've been anxiously hoping to somehow score an unlocked N9 in the US sans gray-market importers, apparently Fry's Electronics has you covered. Phone News spotted a listing for the phone in the store's latest weekly ad -- although upon closer inspection, it appears that the retailer isn't too sure about its actual specs. Aside from describing the 3.9-inch slab of polycarbonate as a 4.3-inch device, it's also flubbed on the OS, calling it "Mego." Perhaps the most interesting error, however, is that the handset's ClearBlack AMOLED display is listed as Super AMOLED -- Samsung's competing technology. Assuming these are merely copy errors, you'll be able to pick one up for a spendy $600. Hit up the source link below to view the full ad.

802.11-2012 WiFi freshens up spec with 3.7GHz bands, mesh networking

802.11 abgnxywtfbbq

It's hard to believe that 802.11 WiFi has only had three major revisions since it was started up 15 years ago. The IEEE must be equally surprised, as it's introducing a new 802.11-2012 standard that unites 10 technologies from various amended WiFi versions under one big tent. Among the picks are new support for 3.65 and 3.7GHz bands, to avoid clashing with 2.4GHz or 5GHz networks, as well as better support for direct linking, faster cellular hand-offs, in-car networks, roaming and mesh networking. You can pay $5 to have a peek at the 2012 WiFi spec today, although we'd brace for a significant wait before smartphones and routers ship with the new 802.11 format -- we know how long it can take for a WiFi standard to become a practical reality.

Eat the Document

eatthedocumentWith all the press releases masquerading as news, Techmeme has felt more like Craiglist for articles in the past few months, or is it years. But recently we finally got some real news, when Google of all people released Gdrive. We knew of course that it was coming, but not how it would actually feel when it got here. I haven?t signed up yet, but already it?s a big deal for me. I haven?t signed up because the iOS versions are not done, or ready, or whatever imminent means. When they are shipped, I?m there. Gdrive is the kind of disruption that lurks beneath the surface, behind the marketing campaign, irrespective of even Google?s position in the market. It is like Gmail was when it started, a harbinger with real muscle that marks the beginning of something bigger than a single vendor.

Screen Grabs: Are agents on Fringe flashing their Google Wallet?

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Screen Grabs: Are agents on Fringe flashing their Google Wallet?

We're not sure exactly what the FBI's standard issue kit consists of, but we imagine it has more than a few bits of secret tech. These screen grabs from this week's Fringe, however, would have us believe that the rogue agents like to pick up their tabs with what looks like Google Wallet. We can clearly see a Sprint-branded Galaxy Nexus being used to for a not-so-undercover financial transaction. At least it looks like the agents might have had an upgrade since we last saw them around these parts.

[Thanks, Te-je]

Researchers say they have new clue to Lost Colony

The map shows the North Carolina coast from Chesapeake Bay to Cape Lookout. The map is being used to determine what happened to the Roanoke settlement which disappeared after White sailed back to England. (AP Photo/British Museum)

(AP) ? A new look at a 425-year-old map has yielded a tantalizing clue about the fate of the Lost Colony, the settlers who disappeared from North Carolina's Roanoke Island in the late 16th century.

Experts from the First Colony Foundation and the British Museum in London discussed their findings Thursday at a scholarly meeting on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Their focus: the "Virginea Pars" map of Virginia and North Carolina created by explorer John White in the 1580s and owned by the British Museum since 1866.

"We believe that this evidence provides conclusive proof that they moved westward up the Albemarle Sound to the confluence of the Chowan and Roanoke rivers," said James Horn, vice president of research and historical interpretation at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and author of a 2010 book about the Lost Colony.

"Their intention was to create a settlement. And this is what we believe we are looking at with this symbol ? their clear intention, marked on the map ..."

Attached to the map are two patches. One patch appears to merely correct a mistake on the map, but the other ? in what is modern-day Bertie County in northeastern North Carolina ? hides what appears to be a fort. Another symbol, appearing to be the very faint image of a different kind of fort, is drawn on top of the patch.

The American and British scholars believe the fort symbol could indicate where the settlers went. The British researchers joined the Thursday meeting via webcast.

In a joint announcement, the museums said, "First Colony Foundation researchers believe that it could mark, literally and symbolically, 'the way to Jamestown.' As such, it is a unique discovery of the first importance."

White made the map and other drawings when he traveled to Roanoke Island in 1585 on an expedition commanded by Sir Ralph Lane. In 1587, a second colony of 116 English settlers landed on Roanoke Island, led by White. He left the island for England for more supplies but couldn't return again until 1590 because of the war between England and Spain.

When he came back, the colony was gone. White knew the majority had planned to move "50 miles into the maine," as he wrote, referring to the mainland. The only clue he found about the fate of the other two dozen was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a post, leading historians to believe they moved south to live with American Indians on what's now Hatteras Island.

But the discovery of the fort symbol offers the first new clue in centuries about what happened to the 95 or so settlers, experts said Thursday. And researchers at the British Museum discovered it because Brent Lane, a member of the board of the First Colony Foundation, asked a seemingly obvious question: What's under those two patches?

Researchers say the patches attached to White's excruciatingly accurate map were made with ink and paper contemporaneous with the rest of the map. One corrected mistakes on the shoreline of the Pamlico River and the placing of some villages. But the other covered the possible fort symbol, which is visible only when the map is viewed in a light box.

The map was critical to Sir Walter Raleigh's quest to attract investors in his second colony, Lane said. It was critical to his convincing Queen Elizabeth I to let him keep his charter to establish a colony in the New World. It was critical to the colonists who navigated small boats in rough waters.

So that made Lane wonder: "If this was such an accurate map and it was so critical to their mission, why in the world did it have patches on it? This important document was being shown to investors and royalty to document the success of this mission. And it had patches on it like a hand-me-down."

Researchers don't know why someone covered the symbol with a patch, although Horn said the two drawings could indicate the settlers planned to build more of a settlement than just a fort.

The land where archaeologists would need to dig eventually is privately owned, and some of it could be under a golf course and residential community. So excavating won't begin anytime soon. But it doesn't have to, said Nicholas Luccketti, a professional archaeologist in Virginia and North Carolina for more than 35 years.

Archaeologists must first re-examine ceramics, including some recovered from an area in Bertie County called Salmon Creek, he said.

"This clue is certainly the most significant in pointing where a search should continue," Lane said. "The search for the colonists didn't start this decade; it didn't start this century. It started as soon as they were found to be absent from Roanoke Island ... I would say every generation in the last 400 years has taken this search on."

But none have had today's sophisticated technology to help, he said.

"None of them had this clue on this map."

XCOR Lynx propulsion tech tests well on motorcycle, suborbital trip still pricey

Image

Before parting with $95,000 to secure a spot on the Lynx suborbital flight, you'd want to make sure the spacecraft was safe, right? XCOR doesn't blame you: it recently tested out its piston pump technology on a Triumph Street Triple motorcycle with great results. Sure, it's not the same as flying to the edge of space, but the Triumph has the same cylinder arrangement as the Lynx's liquid oxygen and kerosene fuel pumps and develops a similar amount of horsepower. It's also loads cheaper than testing in the laboratory. The bike took a 20-hour drive (the equivalent of 400 Lynx flights, according to XCOR) along Route 66 without the piston pump suffering any wear and tear. So if propulsion-related safety concerns -- and not the depth of your wallet -- were holding you back from nabbing a seat on the Lynx, you might feel a tad more inclined to whip out the plastic now. Head past the break for the full PR, plus a video of the piston-pumped Triumph in action.

Scientists unravel mystery of pigeon GPS ability (+video)

Scientists have detected special nerve cells in pigeons' brains that can detect the intensity and direction of magnetic fields.

The next time someone calls you bird-brained, you should assume that you are being complimented on your sense of direction.

Skip to next paragraph We've always known that pigeons have a good internal compass?and now we have the brain cells to prove it.

Pigeons, in particular, are known for their innate homing ability, having been used as messengers since ancient times. We know that pigeons have some kind of internal magnetic compass,?but exactly what it is and how it works has remained a mystery.

Now scientists are?one step closer to decoding the birds' magnetic sense. Writing in the journal Science,?Le-Qing Wu and J. David Dickman at Baylor College of Medicine described what happened when they put seven pigeons in an artificial magnetic field and observed their brains.

Wu and Dickman put the pigeons in a completely dark room, clamped their heads in place, connected their brain stems to electrodes, and used a Tesla coil to cancel out the effects of the Earth's magnetic field and to induce a new one. Then they fiddled with the angle and the intensity of the magnetic field and watched which parts of the pigeons' brains lit up.

Ultimately, Wu and Dickman identified 53 neurons in the pigeons' brain stems that responded to magnetic stimuli.?

"The cells responded to the angle and intensity of the magnetic field. Some cells were more sensitive depending on what direction we aimed the magnetic field around the bird?s head," Dickman said in a Baylor press release.

Of course, being able to tell which way is north is not the same thing as knowing your position on the globe. (If you doubt this, have a friend blindfold you and drop you in a boat in the middle of the ocean with just a compass. You'll quickly realize that, Even though you can determine your bearing,?you still have no idea where you are. You'll also realize that you need better friends.)?

Pigeons seem to have both an internal compass and an internal map. Dickman and his colleagues believe that pigeons encode the information from these magnetically attuned nerve cells to spatial maps in the memory centers of their brains.

"Birds give us a unique opportunity to study how the brain develops these spatial maps and the receptors that feed into it because they have such a great ability to navigate," said?Dickman in the press release.?

Samsung, reigning smart phone champ, preps Galaxy S III

The Galaxy S III is set to debut in the US in June. What will it mean for Samsung??

Yesterday, Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy S III, a svelte new smartphone equipped with a?4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, a?1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor, and a June launch date. ?

In a hands-on preview posted at Engadget, Mat Smith faulted Samsung for not upping the design quotient ? the Galaxy S III looks not so different from other Samsung phones ? but praised the display and predicted that the snappy processor which should help the Galaxy S III "spar for top spot among Android devices." So hey, what will the Galaxy S III mean for Samsung??

Well, here's where things get interesting. According to a recent report from IDC, Samsung currently owns the biggest slice of the global smartphone market, besting even Apple, its closest competitor. In the first quarter of 2012, Samsung sold a whopping?42.2 million smartphones, compared to the 35.1 million sold by Apple. (As one reporter has pointed out, "every second smartphone sold across the world [now comes] from either Samsung or Apple.")?

But that doesn't mean that Samsung is necessarily earning more than Apple. Over at CNET,?Asymco analyst Horace Dediu tells Lance Whitney that worldwide smartphone operating profits are split between only two major players: Apple, with 73 percent, and Samsung, with 26 percent. HTC, in third place, gets 1 percent of the pie. That means that everyone else is either losing money or fighting over a rounding error.?

The reason Apple makes so much money off the iPhone? Carrier subsidies,?Dediu?says. The iPhone helps carriers stay "competitive," CNET reports, and the carriers are willing to pay a premium for that privilege.?

"Following this value proposition to its logical conclusion would suggest that the industry is rewarding those who can supply computers-as-phones which preserve the cash flows of what is essentially a trillion dollar data services business," Dediu says. "Vendors which cannot offer this solution saw their businesses implode. At least on the high end."

And herein, we return again to the Galaxy S III, which has already inspired an iPhone-worthy puddle of drool. If Samsung can succeed in making its new device a "must-have," as the Apple smartphone is now, it could also start to rack up the kind of carrier subsidies currently enjoyed by Team Cupertino. It's a long shot, of course, but if there's one Samsung phone that could do it, it's the Galaxy S III.?

Online Gaming Tournaments | Sports Book

With the rapid development of the Internet and the increasing popularity of multiplayer gaming, games have become the ?in? thing with our generation. There has been a notable increase in online multiplayer elements being integrated into most games. With the onslaught of new gaming titles in the market, more and more people are starting to explore the gaming world. Even if competitive gaming doesn?t measure to the ranks of actual competitive games like sports, it?s still getting a strong following. There are a few titles which have fostered their own competitive communities.

The squad-based ?League of Legends,? which originated from the renowned ?Warcraft III? custom map ?Defense of the Ancients,? is starting to become popular amongst gaming communities. Even if it still has a lot to achieve when compared to its predecessors in markets outside of Europe and the US, it obviously has a lot of potential for future growth. The gameplay?s flaws has been fixed, dealing with limitations that were found in the original. Like most games, LoL introduced the creation of clans and it has made its presence known in professional competitive arenas, even overpowering DoTA in most major tournaments.

?Counter-Strike? is one of the most popular titles in the FPS market and has managed to become even bigger that the game it originated from. The game still makes waves in competitive online gaming events and even stayed longer than top rank titles like ?Unreal Tournament? and ?Quake 3,? along with a long list of FPS titles that have come out since. The game still maintains the basics, along with a number of updates, which have made the game so much more fun to play. The team features also introduces the ?clan? concept in gamers.

Fans waited for over a decade for the second installment of ?StarCraft?, and it was well worth it. When ?StarCraft II? was released, it replaced the original as the go-to game for strategy players of competitive online games. The end product can be compared to a much more complex and engaging version of chess. Players constantly discover detailed strategies for the game itself and in the meta-game.

?Street Fighter IV? has recently become popular among PVP online games due to the development of its meta-game. The new addition to the title?s series returns gamers to the classic cast of ?Street Fighter II? while maintaining the series? strategic combat. Even if it can?t be compared to Namco?s ?Tekken 6? as of yet, there?s still time for it to be developed.

Video games bring out the competitiveness in the players. They like to enjoy their high scores, and they?re fond of beating other players. This makes the games even more thrilling to play. Having an end goal of winning, just for the fun of it, makes playing video games a top activity of people these days.

PoP Video peripheral turns iPod touches and iPhones into pico projectors for $99

PoP Video peripheral turns iPod touches and iPhones into pico projectors for $99

While it may not be the first time we've come across such a concept, this PoP Video add-on is certainly quite different than, say, WooWee's Cinemin Swivel -- and significantly cheaper, too. The PoP Video pairs up with iPod touches (3rd / 4th generation) and iPhones (4 / 4S) via Apple's proprietary 30-pin connector, essentially turning your device into an unorthodox pico projector. According to PoP's site, the 3.5 ounce peripheral's capable of 960 x 540 video output and can give you up to two hours of "playtime" on a single charge -- achieved by way of micro-USB. It all wouldn't be worth it without the free iOS app, though, which lets folks tinker with settings and do what it's intended to do: project videos, pics as well as browsing within Safari. The $99 PoP Video is up for pre-order now, and you can get a quick glimpse of the accessory in action just past the break.

'It was a song we did, kind of like a funny, kind-of-a-joke song,' Diplo tells BBC Radio of B's 2011 single, which sampled his Major Lazer song.

This may come as a surprise to devoted disciples of the Queen B, but according to producer Diplo, Beyoncé's 2011 single "Run the World (Girls)" actually started as "a joke."

"I think a lot of people don't even realize where that song came from," Diplo told BBC Radio's Newsbeat. "That song never really had a push. It was a song we did, kind of like a funny, kind-of-a-joke song."

"Run the World" was released as the first single from Bey's much-anticipated 4 album, though it was met with a slightly puzzled reaction from some of her die-hard fans and failed to generate much heat on the charts, reaching only #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Subsequent singles "Best Thing I Never Had" and "Love on Top" fared slightly better, going as high as #16.

Of course, Diplo isn't actually credited as a producer on "Run the World" (that honor would go to The-Dream, Switch, Beyoncé herself and Shea Taylor), but he did snag a writing credit, thanks to the song's hefty sample of his Major Lazer track "Pon de Floor." But he did produce the 4 track "End of Time" and remembered the experience as a surreal one.

"We had to finish up a few records we were working with her on," Dip said. "That was super-weird, man. Like, I remember we were in the studio working with her and I still couldn't believe it."
