Homes and businesses lead energy efficiency gains, cars lag ...

A swing away from heavy industry, more use of electricity for home heating and dramatically better use of planes contributed to an overall improvement in New Zealand's energy efficiency between 1990 and 2011, new figures from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment show.

However, the mining sector has become much more energy intensive over the same period and the move to larger cars and less use of public transport has seen the overall energy efficiency performance of passenger vehicles worsen over those 21 years.

Total energy consumption grew in all categories owing to population and economic growth, and the figures, developed with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, seek to isolate the impact of improved energy efficiency.

They divide New Zealand's energy use into three broad categories: residential, transport, and a business category covering all industry, commercial activity and public sector consumption, other than oil refining and chemical manufacturing such as methanol and agri-chemical production.

Energy intensity in the business category, accounting for 64 percent of total energy consumption, fell by 21 percent over the two decades, from an average of 2.9 Petajoules of energy per $1 billion of output in 1990 to 2.3 PJ's per billion dollars in 2011.

Among reasons for this were a slump in energy use after the global financial crisis, with gross consumption falling from a peak for the period of about 260PJ's in 2007 to just under 250PJ's in 2011.

But structural changes to the economy were also important contributors, as energy intensive activities grew more slowly than the commercial sector, reflecting a switch to wood waste from coal in wood product manufacturing, and a drop in highly energy-intensive wood processing from 2005 onwards.

"Consumption of both electricity and wood increased significantly between 1990 and 2011, whereas the consumption of gas, coal and liquid fuels all remained relatively flat during this time," MBIE says.

The overall impact was an energy efficiency dividend for the business category of 11 PJ's between 1990 and 2011.

While household consumption grew by 29.8 PJ's in the 21 years, that was mainly due to population growth, a move to smaller numbers of people per household in the 1990's, and a trend to larger homes in the 2000's.

Accounting for 12 percent of total national energy consumption, the residential sector was the biggest gainer in energy efficiency terms, with the switch away from fossil fuels to electricity for household energy driving an energy efficiency gain equivalent to 17 PJ's during the period.

Passenger transport showed the most mixed trends, reflecting the shift from transporting goods by low energy-intensity shipping to higher energy-intensity trucking by road, and a slight worsening in the energy intensity of both cars and buses.

"The potential exists to significantly decrease energy consumption by shifting mode share from cars to buses and rail due to their relatively low energy intensities," MBIE says.

Offsetting this worsening trend for land transport was a dramatic improvement in the energy efficiency of aircraft used in domestic travel, mainly reflecting fuller planes. Planes were around 60 percent full in 1990, compared with about 80 percent full by 2011, halving the energy intensity rating for domestic aviation.

Industry sub-categories showed substantial variation in energy intensity trends over the two decades.

Mining, including oil and gas activity, showed a 52 percent increase in energy intensity to 3.5 PJ's per billion dollars of output from 2.3 PJ's in 1990: the largest single increase of any industry, although mining is one of the smallest sectors by total energy use.

The biggest energy-using industry - wood, pulp, paper and printing - became 33 percent more energy-intensive, going from 14.3 PJ's per billion dollars of output in 1990 to 19 PJ's.

Non-industrial "commercial" activity showed a 25 percent energy efficiency gain over the period, while the non-metallic minerals sector - covering activity such as cement and lime making - showed a 40 percent improvement.

P12 Enterprises launches its new website, Lee Mcintyre Products (http://www.leemcintyreproducts.net), to help people select the appropriate home based business course for their needs. In addition, P12 Enterprises plans to make their new website the go-to destination for everything related to Lee Mcintyre?s courses and products.

LeeMcIntyreProducts.net is a website dedicated to providing unbiased reviews of the different digital courses offered by online entrepreneur, Lee McIntyre. The website examines both the good and bad points of Lee?s training courses and products. P12 Enterprises strives to produce thoughtful and honest reviews, knowing how hard these can be to find online. Evaluating the pros and cons of these work-from-home courses makes it easier for people to decide which courses are suitable for them and which ones will end up wasting their time and money.

?Everyone knows ? or thinks that they know ? that it?s possible to make money using the internet. The tough part is actually doing it. Lee McIntyre?s courses bring that knowledge into the open,? said William Bogge, owner of P12 Enterprises, in a recent interview.

During the 5 years that Bogge has been in the online business world, he has seen a fair share of useful and useless home business models. ?A website that reviews work from home programs is an excellent resource, one that supports everyday people who are starting their own web based business during these tough economic times,? said Bogge.

The Lee McIntyre Products website goes over each of Lee Mcintyre?s courses in detail, courses which cover various online business models and methods. For example, to find out why and how you should build a list of subscribers, check out Lee?s Super List Building System, or if you are interested in affiliate sales you can get more details with Mr. Super Affiliate.

For an inside look at how to build an online business, take a look at Lee McIntyre?s Platinum Coaching program, where members are entitled to exclusive and instant access to videos, informative articles, reports and e-books on the latest and previous products and strategies that can help in building an online business. The course is a good resource for both newbies and veterans in the field. To find out more check out Platinum coaching review.

Lee Mcintyre?s products and courses are devoted to showing regular people how to build a real home based business. LeeMcIntyreProducts.net explores, examines, and reviews the different types of courses offered by Lee McIntyre. Reviews will include products on business building, list building, product creation, video copywriting and more.

About Lee Mcintyre:

He?s a high school teacher turned successful online business man. Starting with a small, simple course on how to be a better high school teacher, he has built his business into a multi-million dollar enterprise. Over the last 2 years he has launched at least twenty courses on the different aspects of how to build a successful business online. Lee has also built a large following of loyal customers, in part because of his natural ability to teach, but also because of his habit of ?over-delivering? in everything he does.

According to the Boston-based research firm Forrester Research, US online consumers are expected to spend 7 billion by the end of this year (2011). With that much money in the online ecosystem, working from home can be potentially very profitable. Turning this potential into an actual successful home based business are what Lee Mctinyre?s courses are all about.

Make Your Home Imporvement Projects Easier With This Simple ...

There are many reasons to embark on home improvement projects. Some are tired of how their house is looking. Others hope to increase their home values. While still there are those that do it because they have fun working on projects that are hands on. Whatever your reason, here are some tips about home improvement.

There are many purposes that can be served by installing a backyard fence. A fence can keep your family and pets safely away from stray animals. It stops pets and kids from running away, too. There are many fencing designs that can help improve your home.

When you install new kitchen cabinets, make sure each one is screwed directly to a stud in the wall. You should mark every stud before you begin the project. This is quite simple to do with a low cost stud finder from an online store or the hardware store near you.

If you?re a homeowner, never hire an unlicensed contractor for work around your house. All contractors have to be certified. Of course, this doesn?t mean your contractor is competent, but is does show that he has the proper credentials. Contractors without the right licenses probably don?t have professional insurance, which means that working with them is risky.

Purchase a few sealant strips and draft excluders. For example, draft excluders sit under a door to keep it air-tight. You will get the same functionality with sealants trips which fit around the door frame. You can find these in hardware and home improvement stores.

When performing outside home improvements, make sure you keep up with the surrounding properties character or theme. If your house is an eyesore, you?ll have a hard time selling it when the time comes.

Create instant curb appeal. Remove your concrete walkway and install brick pavers for an unique project. Although it is labor intensive, the actual job is quite simple. Rent yourself a jackhammer to get rid of concrete walkways. Afterwards there will be a good surface for you to lay down new pavement.

Think about your surroundings and perform improvements that are sensible. Improvements that make no sense like a sun room with no insulation in a cold climate, or a deck with no shade in a hot climate might deter a possible home buyer. Go with what is normally desired for the area you live in.

Natural lighting in the basement is something that most people don?t have in their homes. To ensure your basement is more livable, plan your artificial lighting layout carefully. Does your basement have walls that come up from ground level? If so, you may be able to install windows that bring in natural lighting.

The ideas presented here are just the tip of the home improvement iceberg. Keep learning all you can to better your home improvement skills. Your home improvement project will be more successful if you do your homework first. Be sure you thoroughly understand what you are doing before you start a new project.

(AP) ? Sean Mannion threw for 276 yards and a touchdown, Oregon State's defense smothered Wisconsin's Montee Ball and the Beavers upset the No. 13 Badgers 10-7 on Saturday.

Mannion connected with Brandin Cooks on a 20-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half to give the Beavers a 10-0 lead then turned it over to the Oregon State (1-0) defense that forced two turnovers and held Ball to 61 yards rushing.

The win snapped Wisconsin's 33-game non-conference winning streak, the second-longest in the country behind LSU.

Wisconsin finished with 207 yards and only 35 on the ground. It was the lowest total yards for Wisconsin in five years. The previous non-conference loss for Wisconsin (1-1) came early in the 2003 season when the Badgers lost to UNLV.

It took 41 years for a Big Ten team to visit Corvallis after Iowa was handed a 33-19 loss in 1971. With this kind of reception from the Beavers, it might be 41 more.

Billed as the biggest non-conference home game in the school's history, the Beavers responded with a stellar defensive effort that made up for missed chances by the Oregon State offense. Oregon State outgained the Badgers 354-207 and had an 11-minute advantage in time of possession.

Wisconsin quarterback Danny O'Brien led one final drive, hitting Jacob Pedersen on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 1:31 left that kept the Badgers from being shut out for the first time in 15 years.

The onside kick was smartly executed by Wisconsin kicker Kyle French, who hit it with his left foot and was initially ruled to have recovered it at the Badgers 46. The play was reviewed and determined that French touched the ball before it went 10 yards giving possession to the Beavers.

Mannion knelt down three times and the upset was complete with the orange-clad Beavers fans racing from the stands and covering the Reser Stadium turf as the final seconds ticked away.

Oregon State's scheduled opener against FCS Nicholls State was postponed when Hurricane Isaac made it difficult for the Louisiana school to make the trip to the Northwest. Coach Mike Riley joked this week his team went through the world's longest training camp.

Mannion was efficient using short passes to make up for Oregon State's struggles running. Mannion completed 29 of 47 passes and four times in the first half led the Beavers inside the Wisconsin 35 only to come away with a 43-yard field goal from Trevor Romaine. Markus Wheaton had eight catches for 87 yards and Cooks had six for 80.

The concerns that arose last week in the Badgers' 26-21 win over Northern Iowa reappeared. Wisconsin struggled to run against the FCS squad and needed a strong performance from O'Brien and receiver Jared Abbrederis to stop the Panthers. Ball had 120 yards rushing against Northern Iowa, but needed 32 carries to get it.

Ball was clogged up all day by the Beavers and O'Brien failed to make enough plays. He finished 20 of 38 for 172 yards and was sacked three times.

It didn't help O'Brien that Abbrederis missed the final 2? quarters with a chest injury. He was hurt when he got sandwiched by Oregon State's Rueben Robinson and Feti Taumoepeau on a crossing route. Abbrederis was taken to the locker room and about 20 minutes later walked under his own power to an ambulance. A school spokesman said Abbrederis was transferred to a hospital for evaluation.

Wisconsin tried to turn the momentum midway through the third quarter only to have the Beavers defense come up with a huge play. Oregon State walk-on punter Keith Kostol dropped a perfect snap and was tackled for a 16-yard loss giving the Badgers the ball at the Oregon State 36.

An 11-yard pass to Pedersen got the Badgers to the Beavers 11, but on second down O'Brien held the ball too long and was sacked from behind by Dylan Wynn, knocking the ball loose and defensive end Scott Crichton fell on it at the 21.

Dempsey, Altidore start for US in WCQ at Jamaica

By The Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:19 p.m. ET Sept. 7, 2012

Clint Dempsey was selected to start in the United States' World Cup qualifier at Jamaica on Friday night, his first competitive match in three months.

Dempsey, who transferred from Fulham to Tottenham last week, missed the start of the English Premier League season while his club status was sorted out. He was among four changes from the starting 11 in last month's 1-0 exhibition win at Mexico, joined by right back Michael Parkhurst, central defender Clarence Goodson and forward Jozy Altidore.

Dempsey's previous match was a World Cup qualifier at Guatemala on June 12.

The rest of the U.S. lineup in Kingston had Tim Howard in goal, Geoff Cameron in central defendse, Fabian Johnson at left back, Jermaine Jones, Kyle Beckerman and Maurice Edu joining Dempsey in midfield and Herculez Gomez paired with Altidore up front.

Motorola Droid RAZR M hands-on

RAZRM

The runt of the brand new RAZR litter is the much-rumored RAZR M, a device that's easy on the budget without skimping on many specs. You've got the same super-fast S4 processor as the rest of the RAZRs here, along with ICS (Jelly Bean's coming by the end of Q4, Moto says), 1 GB of RAM, an 8 MP camera and a 2,000 mAh battery. Performance-wise, the M is on par with the rest of the line-- Motorola has made a concerted effort here to offer the same high-end internals as its flagship devices. The main difference here is size: the M's footprint is considerably smaller than the RAZR HD and Maxx HD, engaging consumers who want a smaller phone without sacrificing screen size. And Motorola has succeeded-- Interestingly enough, despite the smaller footprint, the screen is only shrunk by a few tenths of an inch, down from the 4.7 inches on the RAZR HD and MAXX to 4.3 inches. With that comes a lower qHD resolution, though don't let that get you down. This display looks really great, and a welcome sacrifice for the $99 pricetag.

The RAZR M is a refreshing entry by Motorola, and sets a new standard for mid-level devices. Motorola has proven that you can have your cake and eat it too, and an affordable pricetag is no excuse for junky hardware. The M is up for presale today at 5 p.m. Eastern, and we're walking home with one, so sit tight for a full review in the coming week. Until then, enjoy some hands-on shots below.

Judy's Blog: !@#$% Happens

The Dream Summer
We were supposed to leave for five weeks in Italy on July 29 -- four of those weeks would be spent at an artists' colony housed in a castle in Umbria where I was hoping to finish my new book. A castle! Sound too good to be true? Uh huh?

The Reality
A visit to the radiologist on June 12 for a routine ultrasound (dense breast tissue) led to a core biopsy. Not that I didn't try to jump off the table and tell Dr. S I'd have the biopsy at another time because I had a really busy summer coming up. Oh, yeah--I actually did that, saying I'd discuss it with my GYN and get back to her. She convinced me, in her very quiet way, that my GYN would tell me to have the biopsy. Now.

The biopsy report came back a few days later while I was with my GYN in her office (a long standing appointment). It was good that I wasn't alone and that she, who has been my doctor for seventeen years, could explain it to me. Very early. Very small. Well differentiated. All good news.

But it was ductal carcinoma.

Wait ? me? There?s no breast cancer in my family (recent extensive genetic testing shows no genetic connection). I haven?t eaten red meat in more than 30 years. I?ve never smoked, I exercise every day, forget alcohol - it?s bad for my reflux - I?ve been the same weight my whole adult life. How is this possible? Well, guess what ? it?s possible.

Decisions
The biopsy report was a shock. Isn't it always? What do you do? Where do you go? I'm an emotional person. I'd read Betty Rollin's book, First You Cry, long ago - but for whatever reason I didn't cry. I choked up that first day, but the tears didn?t flow. This is neither good nor bad. It just surprised me. Instead, I sprang into action. Okay, I thought -- let's gather all the info, talk with both my primary care docs in NY. Talk with friends who've been through this. Ask for recommendations. Get a list of breast surgeons. Get this done. Taking charge (or thinking I was taking charge) made me feel better.

What follows are some of the hardest decisions I?ve ever had to make.?

The breast surgeon and the oncologist/breast cancer researcher who helped put my team together were great, and both were okay with either lumpectomy followed by radiation, or mastectomy with or without reconstruction. The decision was mine to make.

My cardiologist (primary care) and my GYN were not in favor of radiation for me. They know my body. They?ve cared for it for many years. I trust them. And while they have patients in common, they don?t really know each other. They are affiliated with different hospitals. Hearing the same thing from each of them was powerful. I won?t go into their reasons here. They?re specific to me. They have nothing to do with what might be the right treatment for someone else. (Most of my friends with BC have had lumpectomy and radiation.) They helped me make the decision to have mastectomy and reconstruction. Once the date was set I felt a sense of relief as I always do when I have a plan in place. Then, more decisions.

Breast Size Redux
I have small breasts (a la Margaret Simon). A-cups? The breast surgeon asked at our first meeting. She nailed it. I told her the exercises didn't work for me. Not sure she got my attempt at a joke. Like Margaret I used to think bigger was better. But my dense, small breasts aged well. They stayed perky while other body parts sagged. I'd become quite fond of them. Still, the idea of mastectomy wasn't a difficult emotional decision for me (again, these are very personal reactions and decisions). Maybe because my breasts have never defined my sexuality. Who knows?

At the shop where I was sent (pre-surgery) to get a couple of mastectomy camisoles for post surgery comfort, a yenta with a sense of humor said, Honey... take them both off and get yourself a matched pair. She wasn't the only one who recommended that. And I admit, sometimes I think I should have. Not for the "matched pair" but for the worry that it will happen again in the other breast. I have friends who've gone that route. If I were younger I think I?d have made a different decision. But I was focused on having as little anesthesia as possible, and the quickest recuperation.

The plastic surgeon thought she could do the reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy, saving me a second surgery months later. When it comes to reconstruction there are more decisions to make --implants or autologous? If implants, saline or silicone? By then I was so tired of having to make decisions I went with whatever would make the surgery easiest on me, give a decent result, and left the rest to the plastic surgeon, who had been highly recommended and was part of my team from the beginning. (silicone implant)

Six Weeks from Diagnosis to Surgery
During those six weeks, with the docs? blessing, we were able to go to Nantucket where we?d rented a house for two weeks. Tiger Eyes was screening at the film festival and all our kids had plans to visit. It was a great two weeks. I got in plenty of beach time, we played Pounce every night, and most importantly, we all enjoyed our time together. During one thunderstorm (I?m phobic about lightning and thunder ? have been as long as I can remember) we were in the car and the kids were concerned about me. I said, Hey, I have breast cancer. What?s a little lightning and thunder? (I?d like to tell you I?m no longer phobic but I?d be lying.)

When we got to Nantucket I went cold turkey off my estrogen patch (on the docs? advice) without knowing if my tumor was ER positive (it was). I?d been using it for seventeen years and I really miss it. I?m having my first hot flashes at age 74. (Most of my friends with BC had never used any kind of HRT.)

We also got to spend four fabulous days in San Francisco, as planned, where Tiger Eyes was screening at the SFJFF.

Note to disappointed fans in San Francisco: I?m sorry I couldn't stay after the screening to sign your books. Now you know why. I wasn't supposed to be in crowds. Could not take the chance of catching a bug before surgery. On the plane I wore a surgical mask (and scrubbed our seats, tray tables, etc, like a lunatic while George pretended to be asleep) but I couldn't do that with you without explaining, and the time wasn't right for explaining. I?ll come back to your beautiful city and sign books for you another time.

July 30
I'm not afraid of surgery. Maybe I should be. Anesthesia can be dangerous but I'd had a hysterectomy seventeen years ago (cervical cancer caused by HPV). We didn't know it was cervical cancer before the surgery but we knew something was going on. Caught it just in time, extensive but still in situ. No other treatment necessary. Another story for another time. If I had a young daughter or son I'd talk to their docs about having the vaccine to protect them from getting or giving HPV. If only there was a vaccine to protect us from breast cancer we'd be lined up -- wouldn't we?

Anyway, this surgery went well, one night in the hospital, very little pain.

Going Public
My friends who've had breast cancer have been so helpful and supportive I can never thank them enough. They got me through this. They were my inspiration. If we can do it, you can do it! They were right. And I got off easy. The cancer hadn't spread anywhere. I don?t need chemo which is a whole other ballgame. (I'm considering taking a daily med but haven't yet made up my mind.) Also, I?m older, which is very different from being diagnosed when you?re young.

Now it?s one month post surgery -- I'm still in NY and feeling stronger every day, walking a couple of miles in the park each morning and going out to early dinners with George. Have seen movies and a couple of plays, as you know if you follow me on Twitter. I?m able to read again without falling asleep. Which doesn't mean I don't need a nap every day. I'm not working on my book yet (have just been given permission to type an hour at a time with arm exercises in between) but I'm thinking about getting back to it after Labor Day, kind of like starting school.

I have to thank Dr. S, the radiologist who's been doing my mammograms for 20 years. If she hadn't decided I should have a sonogram because of dense breast tissue we still wouldn't know. This didn't show up in a mammo or in physical exams, and I'm checked by doctors four times a year. Even the breast surgeon couldn?t feel this one. If you have dense breast tissue ask your radiologist about having a sonogram.

I?m lucky to have a loving, supportive partner in life (husband George) who has been fantastic, accompanying me to every doctor?s appointment, keeping me amused, making sure I?m well fed, and reassuring me every step of the way. I'm grateful to him and the rest of my loving family.

As I've told my friends who've also been treated for breast cancer, I've joined The Club - not one I wanted to join or even thought I would ever be joining - but here I am. I?m part of this Sisterhood of the Traveling Breast Cells (apologies to Ann Brashares). Medical diagnoses can leave you feeling alone and scared. When it comes to breast cancer you?re not alone, and scary though it is, there?s a network of amazing women to help you through it.

Stay well.

Galileo didn't invent thermometer that bears his name

ScienceDaily (Sep. 5, 2012) ? The great Italian scientist Galileo may have been the first person to use a telescope to observe the heavens, helping spark the scientific revolution of the 16th century, but Galileo definitely did not invent the famous thermometer and captivating curiosity that bears his name.

That's the message of an article in ACS' Journal of Chemical Education.

Peter Loyson explains that a number of companies sell so-called "Galilean thermometers," sealed tubes of liquid in which glass spheres float and sink with changes in ambient temperature. Modern versions have morphed into elegant curiosity pieces with multi-colored spheres and gold-plated temperature tags. The instruments rely on a liquid, like water or alcohol, whose density increases as temperature falls. The glass spheres each are made to a precise density that matches that of the suspension liquid at a specific temperature. When a sphere floats midway up the tube, it represents the temperature of the room.

Although Galileo may have originated the idea in a 1638 book, the Accademia del Cimento, an early scientific society founded in Florence in 1657 by Galileo's students, actually deserves the credit, Loyson says. The Accademia del Cimento -- "the Academy of Experiment" -- developed other instruments, as well. Loyson suggests "Florentine thermometer" as a more appropriate name for these colorful marvels.
