Romney homestretch game plan: jobs, jobs, jobs

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? His convention behind him, Mitt Romney enters the campaign homestretch with a singular goal: convince Americans disappointed with President Barack Obama that the Democrat is to blame for the stagnant economy and that only he can fix it.

"You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had, was the day you voted for him," Romney said, accepting the Republican nomination that eluded him four years ago.

It was the start of a closing argument that aides say will be singularly focused on jobs ? the issue on the top of voters' minds ? between now and Nov. 6, as the GOP challenger looks to woo voters who put their faith into Obama four years ago but have soured on him with unemployment stuck at 8.3 percent and the economy sputtering.

Polls show a close race nationally and in key states, ensuring that the hard-hitting, personal attack-filled campaign of the summer will continue this fall, if not escalate.

Romney's challenges are great. Most voters say they like Obama better than Romney, who struggles to connect with voters. Most also think the president will win a second term.

Romney has fewer paths than Obama as he looks to cobble together victories in enough states to win the 270 electoral votes needed to become president. And his image has been dented after a barrage of negative ads by Obama and his allies that cast the Republican as a heartless job-killing corporate titan.

Still, Romney has a slight edge in surveys over Obama on the question of who would better handle the economy. Between his campaign and allied super political action committees, Romney also is expected to have a significant financial advantage over the president and his backers. And he also has this going for him: Most Americans say the country is going in the wrong direction under Obama.

With polls showing close races or Obama with a slight edge in key battleground states, Romney's team is weighing whether to try to expand the playing field. They're considering pouring money into three industrial states Democrats have long won but where Republicans sense opportunity: Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Doing so would force Obama to spend money defending his home turf while potentially giving Romney more electoral-vote paths to the White House.

In the coming weeks, Romney will focus on narrowing Obama's advantage with women, arguably the most critical constituency this fall, and energizing white voters who lean more heavily toward the Republican challenger than the Democratic incumbent. And all the while, he'll focus on those who can tip the balance in a close race.

"The people who are really open to voting for me, that I need to get to vote for me to win the presidency are independents and Democrats who've been disappointed by the last four years," Romney told CBS News in an interview this week.

To get them solidly in his camp, Romney will emphasize anew his record in private business as he looks to take advantage of the edge he has on handling the economy.

His advisers say they remain convinced that Romney's successful career at private equity firm Bain Capital holds the key to the White House despite Obama's efforts to undercut the key rationale for Romney's candidacy.

Obama has spent months ? and millions ? working to sully those credentials by criticizing Romney over his Swiss bank account, his former company's instances of outsourcing jobs and his refusal to release more than two years' worth of his own tax returns. The Democrats claim Romney would govern with a profit-at-any-cost mentality that would benefit the wealthy and hurt the middle class.

While the emphasis will be on the economy and jobs, Romney's team will try to make his case by seizing on related issues like welfare reform and entitlement programs as he looks to pick off support from his target demographic groups.

He will rely on running mate Paul Ryan to help him make the case as the primary critic of Obama. It was a role on display Wednesday when the Wisconsin congressman stood at the convention podium. Ryan also brings Midwestern appeal.

To show his more personal side, Romney will turn even more to his wife, Ann.

A warm, charismatic figure, Mrs. Romney has stepped up her campaigning this week and drew rave reviews with her convention speech Tuesday. Aides say she'll be on the road as often as possible, partly because the candidate tends to be more relaxed and confident when she's around. One concern is her health. She suffers from multiple sclerosis, and too much flying or exhaustion can hamper her for days if it's not managed.

To sell himself this fall, Romney has turned to a group of admakers from Hollywood and Madison Avenue, collectively dubbed "Mitt's Mad Men" inside the campaign.

Starting Friday, he'll be able to tap his huge stockpile of general election cash, a chunk of the $177 million he had on hand as August began. Obama's campaign and party had $127 million available, according to the most recent public data.

Romney's cash will be spent primarily on television advertising and get-out-the-vote operations in the most competitive swing-voting states: Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Nevada, Colorado and New Hampshire. He's also targeting North Carolina. And he's looking at making a more aggressive play for Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, where outside groups have been on the air for weeks.

Romney will have only a few more opportunities to send a crystalized message to Americans still questioning whether he has what it takes to be president.

To that end, the stakes are high for a trio of October debates.

He's already been preparing for them by reading heavy briefing books. His advisers view these face-to-face meetings with Obama as the best opportunity for Romney to demonstrate just how he stacks up against the president.

The Dangers of Obesity in Women | Diet and Fitness Diaries

Extreme obese women are putting their health and their lives at risk by remaining heavy. While obesity affects both sexes and can ruin the health of men and women, extreme obese women face some special health challenges that men don?t have to worry about.

One condition that only extreme obese women will face because it?s related to their reproductive system is PCOS. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can occur in any woman, overweight or not, but it?s much more common among overweight and obese women.

It can even occur in young girls who are just entering puberty, but generally doesn?t unless they?re overweight. When it occurs very young, serious reproductive problems can result.

PCOS is a condition that can go hand in hand with insulin resistance. When a person is overweight and/or eating a diet rich in simple carbs that are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream, insulin resistance can occur pretty easily.

This is when the body?s insulin production is no longer enough to remove the blood sugar from the blood stream. The body has become insulin resistant because of the large amounts that have been released by necessity over a period of time.

While a person can be insulin resistant and not have PCOS, if a person develops the condition it?s generally because they?re insulin resistant and essentially pre-diabetic. PCOS causes small cysts to grow on the ovaries. While the cysts themselves aren?t harmful, they cause hormone imbalances that lead to other problems.

A hallmark of PCOS is elevated testosterone levels. This male hormone in too high levels in females like extreme obese women can cause things like facial hair growth, excessive hair growth in places like the face, stomach and back, and problems with the reproductive cycle.

When too much testosterone is present in a woman?s body, menstrual periods can be delayed, irregular and either very light or very heavy. In some cases, periods can stop altogether. PCOS can affect the reproductive cycle so much that it can be difficult or impossible for a woman to get pregnant.

PCOS causes weight gain, and can make it very difficult for extreme obese women or any women to lose weight. Acne flare-ups are often a sign of PCOS too, because high levels of testosterone are linked with acne break outs.

Another symptom of PCOS is depression. While being obese can also contribute to depression, the hormone changes and fluctuations caused by PCOS can directly contribute to feelings of sadness and depression, too.

While doctors say that PCOS can?t be prevented, eating healthy, getting regular exercise and not smoking are the recommended treatments for the condition. So it stands to reason that if you practice these things already, even if you?re pre-disposed to developing the condition you may never suffer symptoms of the disease.

PCOS can strike any girl, even teenagers, but those who eat poor diets, don?t exercise, and smoke are at a greater risk. For extreme obese women, it?s almost not a matter of whether or not they?ll get PCOS, but when.

Low-calorie diet may not prolong life: study

A low-calorie diet boosts health but does not prolong life, at least not in rhesus monkeys, scientists reported Wednesday in a new study into a long-held link between food restriction and longevity.

Spanning 23 years, the research found monkeys that ate fewer calories than non-dieting counterparts were healthier but did not live any longer.

Rhesus monkeys are a preferred choice for lab study, as they are long-lived primates like humans -- their average lifespan in captivity is 27 years and the usual maximum is 40 years.

The exceptionally long study, launched at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) in Maryland in 1987, saw monkeys of different ages fed a diet 30 percent lower in calories than others that followed a "normal," nutritious diet.

Animals in both groups lived on average longer than wild rhesus monkeys and were heavier too. None was malnourished, and they were given vitamin and mineral supplements, the researchers wrote in the journal Nature.

Those on the calorie-restricted diet had a lower incidence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer than the rest, and dieting males also had lower cholesterol.

"However, these effects did not translate directly to a beneficial effect in longevity," over the control monkeys, Rafael de Cabo of the NIA's Laboratory of Experimental Gerontology, told AFP.

The study was not designed to explain this phenomenon, and the authors say matching research to measure the impact of calorie restriction on longevity in humans was unlikely.

The findings seem to contradict those of other projects, including an ongoing study at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Centre (WNPRC) which has shown that rhesus monkeys placed on a restricted calorie diet lived longer.

These "mixed results" raised intriguing questions about the benefits of calorie restriction in primates, Steven Austad of the University of Texas' Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies wrote in a comment on the study, also published by Nature.

WNPRC senior scientist Ricki Colman told AFP there were many differences between the two studies that may explain the conflicting outcomes.

Importantly, the WNPRC control monkeys (those whose calorie intake was not restricted) were allowed free access to food, therefore mimicking a human in charge of his own nutrition intake.

In contrast, the NIA control group were given a limited amount of food, thus resembling an ideal human diet -- which may explain why they lived as long as the monkeys on the low-calorie diet.

They were also given vitamin and mineral supplements and the WNPRC group not.

Comparing the two approaches, a compelling picture emerges, said De Cabo: a healthy diet does improve longevity, and eating less of it may slow the onset of some diseases but will not actually prolong life.

Climate change stories from the abyss

Thursday, August 30, 2012

A team of scientists including those from the University of Southampton have shed new light on the world's history of climate change.

The Pacific Ocean has remained the largest of all oceans on the planet for many million years. It covers one third of the Earth's surface and has a mean depth of 4.2 km. Its biologically productive equatorial regions play an important role particularly to the global carbon cycle and long-term climate development.

During a four-month expedition of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP) on board the US drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution an international team of more than 100 scientists and technicians recovered 6.3 kilometers of sediment cores from water depths between 4.3 and 5.1 km and drilled 6.3 km of sediment cores at eight locations.

The cores offered an excellent archive of Earth's history and showed how global climate development during the past 55 million years is mirrored and influenced by geochemical processes deep within the ocean.

The findings are published in the latest edition of Nature.

Professor Heiko P?like, of the University of Southampton and National Oceanography Centre, Southampton was co-chief scientist of the cruise and lead author of the Nature study.

He explains: "Nowadays we often discuss global warming induced by man-made carbon dioxide. However, on geological timescales of millions of years other processes determine the carbon cycle."

Volcanoes are one major source of carbon dioxide input to the atmosphere. On the other hand the greenhouse gas is removed by weathering of rocks made up of carbonate.

"The overall balance of these processes is reflected in the deep ocean's carbonate compensation depth, the CCD," the MARUM scientist continues.

"This invisible surface is defined as the depth in the oceans at which the mineral calcite is dissolved. Hardly any biological remains made from carbonate below the CCD, for example chalk and microscopic plankton, are preserved. Instead the sediment that consists mostly of clay and plankton remains made from silica.

"The interesting point in our study is that the carbonate boundary is fluctuating over time. It shallows during periods of warm climate and normally deepens when ice age conditions prevail."

In the study, Professor P?like and co-workers demonstrate that in the equatorial Pacific the CCD was at 3.3 to 3.6km 55 million years ago. Between 52 and 47 million years ago, when very warm climate conditions prevailed, the CCD leveled up to 3 km. 34 million years ago, when the Earth slowly but steadily cooled and the first ice domes formed in Antarctica the CCD went down too. 10.5 million years ago it reached 4.8 km.

The cores drilled during the expedition strikingly demonstrate that the interplay of climate development and carbon cycle was not a one-way street at all.

"From 46 to 34 million years ago, when Earth turned into a permanent icehouse, our record reveals five intervals during which the CCD fluctuated upwards and downwards in the range of 200 and 900 metres," Professor P?like says. "These events, that often mirror warming and cooling phases, persisted between 250,000 and one million years."

Similar episodes were registered in the sediment cores for later parts of the Earth's history. 18.5 million years ago the CCD moved upward about 600 metres ? only to sink down to 4.7 km 2.5 million years later. Today, the Pacific carbonate compensation depth is at 4.5 km.

Propecia and encouraging the regrowth of hair | Recreation and ...

August 29th, 2012 by Leave a reply ?

To understand the problem, we need to go back to basics. The underlying cause of Andogenetic Alopecia is probably genetic although, in some circumstances, environmental factors may trigger an earlier hair fall. This means a slow change in the scalp so that hair no longer grows on certain parts of the head. To put it in simple terms, the genes switch off the roots. The first signs of this are that your hair thins. You shed hair naturally but, as it thins, it falls out more quickly. The main effect of Propecia is to stop this thinning and shut-down from going any further. As a general rule, hair may thicken again in the roots that are still active and, occasionally, some hair will regrow in areas which have shut down. But this regrowth is not guaranteed. You should also remember that the stop in this progressive winding down only lasts so long as you keep taking the pills. This is not a permanent cure. Sooner or later, the genes will win out.

So what, if anything, can you do to encourage your hair to thicken and regrow? The answer lies in ensuring the environmental conditions are at their best. The first step lies in the choice of a shampoo. It?s essential to keep the scalp clean. The issue is how frequently to wash. The answer is not excessively because this will tend to dry the hair by washing out natural oils. It?s certainly not necessary to wash more than once a day. Then consider using one of the antiseptic shampoos or a shampoo containing minoxidil which some believe increases the supply of blood to the scalp and helps to encourage regrowth. You may need to experiment with minoxidil products because some can make your hair a little oily. When you have found a combination of shampoo, minoxidil and Propecia that seems to be working, be consistent. Set yourself into a routine and keep to it so long as you continue the drug. The combination gives you the best chance for your hair both to thicken and, on the temples, to show some regrowth.

The Customer Service Satisfaction | Frederic Siegel Business

A healthy business knows how to effectively cater to their customers in the general interest of business financial stability that is constantly intertwined with above average customer satisfaction.
A good customer service satisfaction goal starts with the knowledge of the customers needs, how these needs are satisfied and how both the giving and receiving end benefit from this knowledge. Customer Satisfaction is a cycle that gradually changes over time. And as needs change, the demands increase and the current delivery of the service is reassessed, each cycle creates strategies on how to increasingly satisfy customers.
Sales are the most common indicator of satisfaction. A high sales average means good customer satisfaction. Accurately stating, the highest overall indicator of true customer satisfaction is retention and exclusive patronage. The key here is to have a good business-to-customer relationship based on rapport and all-out support.
Through face to face interviews, the level of customer satisfaction may be measured. This can be done when a customer walks out of the store or office or has just had firsthand experience of a product or service.
A customer-oriented business has a detailed and easy to grasp FAQ service. Frequently Asked Questions generate the most traffic in Customer Support. FAQ lessens the work of customer service representatives by providing answers to possible queries beforehand. However if there are queries that a customer cannot find an answer to, they may use the technical support service of the business.
For immediate support to customer concerns, calls may be made to inbound call centers or a schedule may be set for an outbound call to the customer. For customers who dont require a timely solution to their concerns, an e-mail support service is also an option. Various methods are made available to address customer needs to ensure that they are attended to in the manner that is most convenient to them.
Escalation management can be considered the hardest task in a customer support system. These are high risk calls with more often than not irate customers. In escalation management, there is an appropriate authority to receive all complaints and interactions. First, there must be a detailed review of the incident. The complaint is then subjected to existing policies for resolution. The goal is to handle the problem quickly, effectively and in the least stressful way possible. A confirmation that the issue has been resolved is always a standard practice. All interactions must be well recorded/documented to minimize liability, provide detailed information and to formulate efficient solutions for prevention of such incidents.
In all businesses, customer satisfaction is a priority. Their patronage provides the life-blood to all business ventures. All customer-related issues are treated seriously no matter the frequency of the complaint because nothing is more important than to keep customers happy. A good business & customer relationship results in higher customer patience, a solid business image and business permanence. Customers FIRST! Everything else follows; happy customers lead to higher gains, happy customers improve credibility and happy customers keep the business thriving.

In all businesses, there is a common belief that others even ask their employees to memorize. This is customers are always right. When this is forgotten in the process of fixing problems with customers, level of customer satisfaction is affected negatively.

A Healthy Nutrition Plan Should Include Krill Oil Dietary - ArticlePDQ

Astaxanthin is an ?essential? nutrient which our body can not reproduce, the same as EPA as well as DHA in omega3s. Consequently we have to ingest it and take it from various other whole meals forms to obtain the benefits from the item. This is an excellent example of exactly why krill oil is such a crucial supplement to take in each of our daily supplement consumption. It is a holistic approach to curing and assisting inside alleviating infection and puts a stop to membrane complete breakdowns in the body.

There are lots of reasons why there is certainly only one victorious one when evaluating the health benefits connected with krill oil vs fish oil. Krill is really a small shrimp-like crustacean which can be found in plethora in the Upper Pacific and also Antarctic oceans. Around some One hundred ten,000 a great deal of the variety are prepared from these areas each year.

Getting DHA is safe throughout large amounts. Your food and Pharmaceutical Administration says that you can take it in 3g each day, which is a ?safe? total. Ban reiterates support for new UN-Arab League envoy on Syrian crisis

August,?24, 2012 ?

Meeting in New York today, Secretary-GeneralBan Ki-moon reiterated his support for the new Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on the Syrian crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi, adding that he would count with the full backing of the international community when he assumes his position on 1 September.

?You have all the respect and full support of the international community,? Mr. Ban told Mr. Brahimi at UN Headquarters. ?It is crucially important that the Security Council and all the United Nations systems support your role.?

Syria has been wracked by violence, with more than 17,000 people, mostly civilians, killed since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began some 17 months ago. Over recent days, there have been reports of an escalation in violence in many towns and villages, as well as the country?s two biggest cities, Damascus and Aleppo.

Speaking before a private meeting, Mr. Ban said Mr. Brahimi has a very important and crucial task to bring peace and stability to Syria, and to promote human rights there. He also praised Mr. Brahimi?s talent and expertise on the region, which he will bring to his new position.

?The longer this fighting goes on the more people will be killed, the more people will suffer. In that regard, your contribution, your leadership, will be very important,? Mr. Ban said.

Mr. Brahimi, an Algerian national, has served the UN in various high-level roles over the past two decades, including heading the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), serving as an advisor on a range of issues, and chairing an independent panel on peacekeeping operations which released its keynote findings, known as the ?Brahimi Report,? in 2000. Mr. Brahimi also served with the League of Arab States from 1984 to 1991 as an Algerian diplomat.

In their exchange, Mr. Brahimi thanked the Secretary-General for the opportunity to serve the Syrian people, and stressed that they would be his ?first masters,? and that he would consider their interests first and foremost.

Appointed last week, Mr. Brahimi is taking over the peace-facilitation role which has been carried out since February by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who provided his good offices on behalf of the UN and Arab League, with the aim of bringing an end to all violence and human rights violations in Syria, and promoting a peaceful solution to the conflict. Mr. Annan?s mandate ends on 31 August.

Space elevator visions are on the rise again

This is the LiftPort Group's basic model for its proposed Lunar Space Elevator Infrastructure, also known as LSEI or "Elsie." LiftPort says the system can be constructed within eight years using commercial technology.

By Alan Boyle

The space elevator concept has had its ups and downs ? but this year, it looks as if the concept's proponents are definitely trying to push the ?up? button again.

There?s a new Kickstarter project, aimed at setting the stage for a lunar space elevator. Space-elevator backers are trying to restart a competition for ultra-strong tethers. And a Japanese company has pledged to get the thing built ? by 2050.

But veterans of the movement say one big thing is required: a revolution in materials science, and specifically carbon nanotubes. Or maybe boron nitride nanotubes.

"The materials are still the long pole in the tent, and I don't see the government getting interested in it," Bryan Laubscher, the founder and president of Odysseus Technologies, told me today. "That's disappointing to me."

Laubscher and other space-elevator advocates will take stock of the past year's ups and downs at the annual International Space Elevator Conference, running from Saturday through Monday at Seattle's Museum of Flight.

Railway to the sky
The idea of building a "railway to the sky" has tantalized dreamers for decades: Just send a satellite up to geostationary orbit, 22,000 miles up (36,000 kilometers up). Send one line back down to Earth, and another line up to an altitude of about 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers) with a counterweight at the end. Secure Earth's end of the line so it's rock-solid, then start sending robotic climbers up and down the line, carrying cargo and passengers.

If the idea can be executed, advocates say it could reduce the cost of access to orbit from its current level of $10,000 or so a pound to $100 a pound?? revolutionizing space travel and potentially opening the solar system to human settlement. That's the vision brought to life in science-fiction novels ranging from Arthur C. Clarke's "The Fountains of Paradise," published in 1979, to this year's opus by Kim Stanley Robinson, "2312."

Clarke once joked that the space elevator would be built "about 50 years after everybody quits laughing." Several years ago, LiftPort Group founder Michael Laine set up a countdown clock that predicted the "first lift" would come even sooner, in 2018. Today, six years seems way too soon, but at least people have stopped laughing.

The key sticking point has to do with the tethers, or cables, or ribbons that would be required to connect a terrestrial liftport with the elevator's orbital destination. Whatever they're made of, that connecting material would have to be stronger than any material that's manufactured today. A synthetic polymer called Zylon ranks among the strongest available, and space-elevator advocates measure its strength per unit of density at 3.9 megayuris. (The "yuri" is an unofficial measurement unit that was named after Russian space-elevator pioneer Yuri Artsutanov.) The specific strength of steel is about 0.5 megayuris. But the stuff of space elevators would have to be on the order of 30 to 100 megayuris?strong.

For years, NASA offered $2 million in prizes to encourage the development of 5-megayuri material, but that challenge expired after last year's contest. The International Space Elevator Consortium is trying to revive the prize program at a lower level, but that won't happen in time for this year's conference.

"I'm confident there's going to be a well-attended strong-tether challenge next year," Ted Semon, the consortium's president and director, told me. "It's our numero-uno mission."

Who's going to build it?
Laubscher thinks it's going to take a government-backed development effort on the scale of the telecommunications revolution of the 1960s to create the materials required for building space elevators.?"I actually think that the first space elevator will be built by the U.S. Department of Defense," he said. "The first one to build the space elevator owns space."

Carbon nanotubes are a good candidate, but lots of technical obstacles will have to be overcome in order to produce long, wide ribbons of carbon nanotubes that are strong enough and resilient enough to do the job. David Horn, the chairman of this weekend's conference, says boron nitride nanotubes offer 75 percent of the theoretical strength of carbon nanotubes and may be easier to manufacture.

"We haven't seen that it can't be done," Horn said of the space elevator concept. "But we really need to get this competition going to give people a financial incentive to do it."

Whether they're made of carbon or boron nitride or polymer, stronger materials will produce a payoff long before the elevator gets built ??in the form of lighter, more fuel-efficient automobiles, airplanes, boats and, yes, even spacecraft. Cheaper, safer, easier access to space would make a big difference in the financial calculations underpinning the space elevator dream. "The world that we'll have with carbon nanotubes will demand that we build a space elevator," Laubscher said.

Here are some of the developments along the road to the space elevator:

  • Liftport Group founder Michael Laine has just begun a Kickstarter campaign to raise $8,000 as the first step in what could be a multimillion-dollar effort to build a lunar space elevator, which is theoretically possible using existing technology. Liftport ran into financial and legal difficulties in 2007, and today Laine admits that "things went south for us" back then. This campaign, he says, marks Liftport's return to the fray after five dark years. "About six months ago, we had a fundamental breakthrough ... and we want you to be a part of it," Laine says in his Kickstarter video. It's debatable whether the lunar elevator concept will get off the ground, but Laine is optimistic. His current countdown clock calls for "first lift" ... presumably from the moon ... by Jan. 1, 2020.
  • In February, the Tokyo-based construction company Obayashi Corp. unveiled plans to transport goods and passengers in a space elevator as early as 2050, according to a report from Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun. The trip to an orbital station would take seven and a half days. "At this moment, we cannot estimate the cost for the project," an Obayashi official was quoted as saying. "However, we'll try to make steady progress so that it won't end up as simply a dream." Although there haven't been any progress reports lately, Laubscher said "the Japanese are way ahead of America" in their enthusiasm for the space-elevator vision.
  • Other places to watch for space elevator developments: One of the leading U.S. forums for carbon nanotube researchers is the Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Workshop, sponsored this year by the University of Cincinnati, the University of Dayton and the Air Force Research Laboratory. This year's workshop is set for Nov. 5-6 at the University of Dayton. Also, The New York Times reported last November that space elevators are on the agenda for the secretive Google X lab. "Google is collecting the world's data, so now it could be collecting the solar system's data," Rodney Brooks, an MIT professor emeritus and founder of Heartland Robotics, told the Times.

How realistic are these visions? Feel free to share your views in the comment space below. And if you're in the Seattle area, you might want to head on over to the Museum of Flight on Saturday. Even if you can't attend the three-day technical program for the International Space Elevator Conference, you can check out what's happening at the Family Science Fest.

Barkin rips Utah station for banning 'New Normal'

By Brandi Fowler, E! Online

Ellen Barkin as Jane on "The New Normal."

Ellen Barkin is tweeting mad over a Utah TV station's decision to not air "The New Normal." The show, which premieres in September on NBC, features a gay couple and the family of the woman who decides to become a surrogate for their baby.

Jeff Simpson, CEO of Bonneville International, parent company of of Salt Lake City NBC affiliate KSL-TV, told the Deseret News in a statement Friday that the show's "crude dialogue, explicit content and offensive characterizations," were the main reasons the station decided to ban it.

"After viewing the pilot episode of 'The New Normal,' we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule. For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time."

More from E: Ellen Barkin allegedly shoved by police officer in NYC

"Shame on u @kslcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal So L&O SVU (rape &child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?," Barkin tweeted Friday. "Anyone in Utah interested in @NBCTheNewNormal please clog up @ksl5tv feed 4 their blatantly homophic decision 2 not air the show #KSLBigots," she later added.

GLAAD also weighed in on the controversy. "Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like Modern Family, Glee and Grey's Anatomy," wrote GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. "While audiences, critics and advertisers have all supported LGBT stories, KSL is demonstrating how deeply out of touch it is with the rest of the country. We invite Jeff Simpson to sit down with GLAAD and local LGBT families.

"We know that if he would, he would see that not only are our families normal, but by citing 'crude and rude' content and refusing to affirm LGBT families, KSL and Mr. Simpson are sending a dangerous message to Utah."

More from E: A brief history of gays on TV?

KSL isn't the first station to have issues with the show's content, though.

Last month, One Million Moms demanded that advertisers boycott the NBC comedy, calling "The New Normal" "harmful to our society."?

"Every person and group has a right to protest something," show creator Ryan Murphy said at the time. "I find it to be interesting that they would take a position before they've seen it."

(E! and NBC are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
