Media and Publishing: India gets Amazon.Com's Kindle

Amazon's launch of the India Kindle Store on Amazon.com (www.amazon.com/kindlestoreindia) with the largest selection, including the most best-sellers, and lowest prices of any e-bookstore in India.

The India Kindle Store offers over one million books, now available for India customers priced in Indian Rupees (INR), including 70 of 100 Nielsen Bestsellers.

In addition, customers can now purchase Kindle ? the world?s best-selling e-reader for five years running ? at Croma retail stores across India.

But the question of market penetration for the Kindle device is important for Amazon but largely irrelevant for publishers. What really matters to them is Amazon's distribution network.

And if Amazon can, indeed, deliver all titles that are subject to worldwide distribution rights to India, then that is a very good thing.

India is a huge English speaking market: China, for example, is a similar size market but with a much smaller population of English readers.

Across South East Asia and the Middle East, Amazon.Com refuses to deliver most e-books, even those with certified worldwide rights. It is coy as to why but it is believed to be, at least in part, due to restrictive literature import laws.

Therefore, if India, which has previously been a closed market for e-books (except for those with access to a proxy server in the US which, because India's enormous outsourcing industry is actually a lot of those English speaking people) has been opened, then there is hope for those living in Singapore, Malaysia and other countries in the region.
